One point I've seen is that a typical youth trans surgery candidate is a 17 year old heading off to college, wanting to make a fresh start in a body that fits better. Not the only justification or course, or (sadly) available to most kids! But a nice indication of how non-worrisome the stories are.
This question is weirdly hard, bc the starting place itself is a result of anti-trans propganda shaping the debate.
Trans surgeries, for all ages, are vastly rarer than hormone therapy only, which is itself rarer than social adjustments alone.
