The games industry brings in 300 billion dollars a year. The guy who made DOOM gets his projects canceled, the guy who made Katamari Damacy is broke, everyone in your feed is begging for a job and there are 50 new games coming out on Steam every day all going towards buying Gabe Newell's next yacht
Keita Takahashi (Katamari, Wattam, Noby Noby Boy) has moved back to Japan, and says he may be forced to quit the games industry due to To a T underperforming.

He also says he'd love to work on Katamari again, and for someone to invest in his studio.

This a bit in The Deep Space Nine Companion where Marvin Rush, Director of Photography, describes being inspired by seeing his wife under specific lighting that lead to a specific shot in the show. He describes himself as a "patient and dedicated observer of the natural world". AI can't have that.

Against Immersion: The Holodeck Must Burn

This is not a place of honor. No highly esteemed deed is commemorated here. Nothing valued is here. For a long time I have been opposed to the idea of immersion in video games, to the idea that people become "immersed" in fictional worlds. I believe there is no specific mental state that can be referred to as being "immersed" in a video game or work of media.

"AI is a tool."

No. Empirically not. A tool empowers people; helps people. It solves an extant problem. Generative AI in creative mediums is being used as a cudgel that diminishes and eliminates people, and the only "problem" being solved is fiscal.

Stop validating it, even in passing.

Took some time to unpack a few thoughts on Expedition 33.

Watching what I thought was a "pretty good" game get transformed into A Cultural Object has been disheartening.

So I have some thoughts on glitz, glamour, and respectability...

The Attempt To Escape From Pain Creates More Pain
Lord forgive me, I'm blogging. I can't help it! Many years ago, I got some advice from a writer who I deeply respect, James Howell, and he told me that criticism needs to proceed confidently. Don't...

Love how the term "indie" is used to describe both a single guy making a videogame inbetween their retail overtime shifts, and also a team of former AAA developers with family connections to obscene wealth

My answer will probably just be "never read a single thing on steam" and I'd say the downside of that is "Then racist BS might be left up in the reviews" but lol no that'll happen anyways apparently so what's the point?

They won't sell Horses, but they'll shrug at shit like this lol

hmm i did ask people to review the arcade mode but i specifically asked for rhythm gamers. if you don’t like rhythm or arcade games maybe you shouldn’t be reviewing them

older games really need to be more accessible. its frustrating to have the same conversations about game design and storytelling on loop every few years because its so difficult for people to personally build deep bodies of game experiences to pull from

a game mechanic is a sort of youkai, wherein the more strictly it's named and defined, the more limited its powers become
Like obviously old games had mechanics like Castlevania's shitty jump and brutal pushback are mechanics... but for a lot of stuff past a certain points, you got mechanics and you got Mechanics. Box features the game must be built around, but which the game rarely lives up to.
