Thinking about viscachas again

I found a 19th century Cat Villain!

A huge chonk of a fluffy cat sitting on a table near an open fire. The cat is cream and grey and appears to be shaped like a barrel in a fur coat. They are scowling fiercely with their moustache and bewhiskered ears apparently flowing back into the cold wind. There's a definite vibe that this villainous cat twirls their moustache as they evict orphans into the aforementioned blizzard and think Scrooge was an easy-going lightweight. They are magnificent.

But all is not lost. The cement is still wet, and even as it hardens we can find hope in the common sense of the global public. In a survey by Focaldata, of 36,000 people in 34 countries we find a clear majority are more resistant to an exclusionary nationalism and more willing to embrace international cooperation than many of the leaders who rule over them.

Across the world there is, perhaps surprisingly, only a small group of hardened anti-internationalists representing 16.5% of the global population (even if 25% in today’s US) who either feel coexistence between ethnic and religious groups is impossible or have a zero-sum mindset that if they or their country do well, it has to be at the expense of others doing badly.

But there are another 21% at the opposite extreme, whom we might call committed internationalists, who either still see cooperation across borders through open trade as a positive sum win-win, or are what the US philosopher and writer Kwame Anthony Appiah calls “rooted cosmopolitans”.

Emergency Health Services-Alberta (EHS-Alberta) is teaming up with Health Link 811 on a new pilot project in Edmonton and Calgary that could see some 911 callers take a taxi instead of an ambulance. The six-month program builds on a partnership that started in 2023, when minor 911 calls were redirected to Health Link nurses for screening. Under the new approach, if a nurse determines a caller should see a doctor within 24 hours but doesn’t need an ambulance, the caller may be offered a free taxi ride to the nearest hospital or urgent care centre.

The Moral Distress for the EMS crews should not be downplayed - imagine if your job is to expertly stabilize and transport, but you frequently have nowhere to transport very sick pts to?
Or your transport times are so long you frequently leave huge areas w no EMS coverage?
