When I say I'm nostalgic for the past, this is specifically what I mean
It's anti blackness. Black men are more likely to have medical problems from shaving.
holy shit. Talk about demoralizing. So sorry

and because i can imagine the bad faith reading of this, what i am *not* saying is that everything about the extant democratic party is hunky dory other than its total absence of a communications/propaganda infrastructure. what i *am* saying is that this absence puts a hard limit on reaching voters
the democratic party’s basic problem is it has almost no control over how its message reaches the ears of voters, especially outside of presidential election years. but rather than devote serious time, attention and cash to that problem its consultants and pundits want to fight factional battles
Aagh and again the weather forecast was clear for tomorrow until suddenly now, a 40% chance of rain. I have to bike to and from an appointment tmrw so I'm displeased!!!
Really noticing the cuts to NOAA in today going from sunny forecast yesterday to definitely rain all day today

“Walmart was the top employer of SNAP recipients in five states and one of the top four employers in the remaining four states. McDonald’s was among the top five employers of Medicaid enrollees in five of six states and SNAP recipients in eight of nine states.”

Whenever people complain about the number of folks relying on food stamps, it is worth reminding them that SNAP is, by too large of a degree, a subsidy for corporations that refuse to pay a living wage and their political allies who reject public policy prescriptions to reduce income inequality.

"I asked ChatGPT" "I asked Grok" ok well I asked Gandalf and he said he has not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm
I think this must be the right read but it definitely took me off guard when she said it!
Can anyone churchy explain what a food pantry employee means when I say "good luck, I know it's about to get really bad" and she says "yes but it's a blessing" ?

One of these cats pawed at me and gave me sad looks until I got back in bed
Pretty sure this is a scene from @annaleen.bsky.social's The Terraformers

COVID is not done with you, even if you're done with it.
I used to feel like I needed to be gentle with people like this; but watching my mother die of COVID complications this year has stripped me of any remaining empathy.
Don't get vaccinated, enjoy the consequences.
Just stay tf away from me.
Survivorship bias is real. People have thoroughly memory-holed COVID, even those who suffered multiple infections or lengthy post-COVID symptoms.

"I'm done with COVID," patients tell me when I suggest they update their vaccine - including those who get an annual flu shot and are at very high risk.
there’s a thread on reddit right now called “was COVID really that bad?” and it is interesting to read people’s accounts five years out

there seems to be a collective trauma response where people (outside of healthcare workers) don’t remember how many people died

someone called it anticlimactic

Hallowe'en is just around the corner and it is one of the most dangerous days for children. Here are some safety tips:

1) Avoid hitting children with your pickup truck, SUV or other motor vehicle. It is technically against the law to harm or kill a child with your vehicle and you could be charged.

Folks if you usually do end-of-year/holiday charity giving, consider moving it up to the beginning of November instead and hit up however many local food pantries you can afford to give to. (Check if you or a spouse/partner's employer does charity matching, too.)
In short, we do not know exactly what will happen with November SNAP benefits if the shutdown continues, but we do know there will not be enough money available to fully fund everyone's EBT card.

They have an event there this Saturday about bats ... Maybe worth going so I can swing by the maples too.
- get in bed to go to sleep
- first one cat and then the other jumps on bed and curls up against me on either side
- a moment of warm peace

- both cats start furiously grooming themselves
🙃

The entire "free speech on campus" moral panic was manufactured to blackmail us into making space in intellectual life for bigots and charlatans who couldn't get there on their own merits. Its a DEI scheme for fascism. Congratulations to everyone who took it at face value.
“Following his lecture, Yarvin will debate the legendary British historian David Starkey on history and the future of conservatism.” Everything about this is so cursed. Masks off at the University of Oxford.
