The Programmer’s Credo (an oldie but a goodie)
My 6 yr-old dog Biscuit knows I don’t like him to bark when we’re at the house and so, all on his own, last week he took up whisper barking instead. The loud barks are from the neighbor dog, while Biscuit is quietly answering back. He figured this out by himself! What a good boy.

The Indiana University football team is undefeated this year. My entire family graduated from IU - my dad and mom met and graduated from there, my sister, and brother both graduated. I’ve never, and I mean never, seen the family group chat go off like this. It’s practically vibrating. Haha.

What a sniveling coward.

An org reached out to ask if I wanted to be on their list of influential women. This would include a feature about me and a plaque I could put on my wall! I could also list them on my CV or my personal brand. All for the low low price of $1200. As tempting as that sounded 🙄 I respectfully declined.

In the race to succeed Ron DeSantis as Fl governor, the man on the left, 30 yr old investment banker with no political experience James Fishback called the man on the right, Trump-endorsed Byron Donalds a ‘slave.’ Not to be outdone Donalds has said that black families were better off under Jim Crow.

Last week I was on Chris Cuomo’s show. Like most right-thinking ppl, my opinion of either Cuomo bro can be summed up with 😕, 🤬, or 🤮 So why did I do it? From my time at Twitter I’ve had ~ 50 media appearances. I always present myself as an expert on AI / social media, which I am. What I DON’T do 1/2

My son is applying to colleges. We got this from Oregon State and were laughing about how the little white pluses all over the picture make it look like Oregon didn’t want to pay the licensing fees to get rid of the watermark. For a picture of their own campus. Such a strange choice on their part.

Kind of amazing that all 5 trending topics here are sports, especially if you consider where we were prior to Nov 2024. I didn’t even know who the Lane Kiffin person was until I looked him up. Even though sports aren’t one of my interests, I think it’s good for the platform.

Just saw Hamnet and I think it’s my pick for best film of the year, a smart gut-punch of a meditation on how people deal with death and loss. It narrowly edged out Sinners and One Battle After Another for me. I didn’t care for Train Dreams, and Sentimental Value was nice, but not to their level.

Oh no! Tom Stoppard died. His play Arcadia - a beautiful look at the past, present, order, and chaos, has a speech from a mathematician on the beauty and power of math that was my audition piece for years and, as someone who’s fascinated by theater AND math, felt like it was written just for me.

I just learned that Oscar Wilde, who died in 1900, has a living grandchild and my brain is kind of breaking.

You knew the National Guard shooter wasn’t trans, wasn’t dating a trans person, friends with a trans person, or even walked anywhere near a trans person on the way to the shooting, because they would have leaked that fact before the soldier’s bodies even hit the ground.

Is AI just a Clever Hans?

You may have seen that accusation floating around—so how much truth is there to it? If you don't know the reference, Clever Hans was a real horse in Germany around the turn of the 20th century who seemed to possess a human-level grasp of math and even written German.

I admit that I’m kind of thrown to learn that the woman I dated for a year and a half is now dating a man whose appearance could most accurately be described as a gay thumb.

Should I pay for my $19.99 movie ticket now or in 4 easy installments? I understand I have a very good chance of approval.

Just submitted my Chapter 1 to the doctoral record and submitted my IRB approval, which I don’t really think I’ll need, I’m using a huggingface benchmark dataset. It’s starting to feel really real.

Here’s an incredibly rough rip of my interview on Chris Cuomo. It got cut off because a friend was screen recording and it he was signing up for the free trial as I was speaking. Although we didn’t get to talk about it much, the actual story is more interesting than the headlines.

Weirdly, I’m going to be on Chris Cuomo’s show in about an hour as a former Twitter employee who worked in political misinfo. Talking about the recent location-based debacle on X. It’s a lot more complicated and interesting than you might think. Check it out or I’ll post links after it goes up.

TIL the sizes of mechanical pencil leads (.7 mm, .5 mm, etc) scale at a 0.7 ratio. That’s because back in hand drafting days, the pens used scaled with the ‘A’ paper sizes so a drawing on A0 paper with 7mm lead scales naturally to a drawing on A1 paper with 0.5mm lead. Check this link.

I’ve never actually read L Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz books, but about a month ago I learned he called the tin man character Nick Chopper and I had to share. It’s way too stupid a name for me to keep to myself.

This image shows an upcoming polar vortex affecting most of the US. Say what you will about the San Francisco Bay Area, but its stubborn refusal to be affected by something so inconsequential as ‘the weather’ is one of its more remarkable features.

Seasonal allergies are so cool. You’ll be in line at the store when all of a sudden you start loudly and uncontrollably sneezing, your eyes turn red and start watering and a truly unfortunate amount of snot starts coming out of your nose. Thanks, human body!

F%$k off National Review with your insidious morality. > 14M ppl in the US owe over $1k in medical debt. 3M owe $10k. 2/3 of all bankruptcies in the US are caused by medical debt. While I would never advocate for violence, the CEO of United Health made $26.3M last year. That’s the insidious morality

Look. You can try to hide the realities of life from your kids, but it’s like I always say, you can teach them about puppet sex, or they can learn about it from the streets. Your choice.
