An economy where the largest and most profitable companies generate revenue through advertising means an ever-increasing pressure to market to consumers, and the consumers are feeling the gap between what they can afford and what they're being convinced they want to buy
What you’re describing here is not an affordability crisis but perpetual miasmatic reactionary discontent, is the thing
Affordability has more baked into it than simply real wage growth. Its real and perceived quality of goods and ease of daily life. The constant comparison to others who “have” more anchors our sense of success. One of the many ways social media and reality TV have warped our minds.

I was in Detroit today for a funeral. On the way back I drove through a blizzard but, as a bonus, I stopped at a rest area near Upper Sandusky, Ohio and this guy was at the urinal next to me, in full costume. We walked out at the same time and people stopped for selfies with him. Ohio is crazy.

I really do think participation trophy culture is a bigger input into why everyone seems to be the way they are today. Just a powerful expectation that things should be different or better than they are with no real explanation or path to get there
