The compound thing is especially funny bc it's one investor who decided to build a luxury town and the local gov said 'well ok... if you want' and then he built it & was like 'ok cool I now need a few million from you to connect up to gas, water etc'. And the local gov was like 'THE FUCK?! No!'

The reason booktok has a reputation for liking poor books is because it skews to younger readers who are naturally going to have their minds blown by new literary experiences. It's the start of a journey for them.

(Publishing allowing booktok to dictate the industry norms is another issue)

Urgh. I get wanting an occasional nice edition of a book you love... but people are buying new release ones as default and then getting really upset when they don't like the weaksauce book but it's 'too pretty' to get rid of.

I'm on BookTube and this is such a THING. It's terribly sad. Especially as book box companies are making gorgeous editions of any old shit to cash in - these people aren't collecting they are just consuming.
