Happy birthday to me, and also to Charles Ives!

Here's one of my favorites of his:

Beginning work on the next concert of the season: Fellowship of the Ring with live score. Sadly, it's not the extended edition, so I don't get to sing this:

Sometimes I feel French, and call myself Louis. Sometimes I feel Italian, and call myself Luigi.
1803 - an advert for some new music by someone called "Louis Van Beethoven". It takes second place behind music by the now-forgotten Ignaz Pleyel.

Second performance of Beethoven 9 is tonight. Our conductor does tend to favor quicker tempi, which I'm generally cool with, but the third movement is faster than I would prefer (by which I mean performed at the actual written tempo of quarter = 60 😅)

Mass deportation is political violence. Drone-bombing a civilian ship is political violence. Funding genocide is political violence. Eugenic healthcare policy is political violence.

I hope everyone saying today that political violence has no place in the US is working to stop all of those things.

I really like the trio theme in the second movement of the 9th. It's an earworm, but I find it an enjoyable earworm, and I love the way the harmonic rhythm is out of sync with the meter

Score-studying the best movement of the 9th (the third) → wow that's a lot of flats for a natural horn part → I wonder if the internet has anything to say about that → this article

The Natural Horn and the Beethoven 9 “Controversy”
The fourth horn solo in Beethoven 9 has been the subject of much speculation over the years. It is a topic I looked at in depth in an article that was published in The Horn Call Annual 8 (1996). Wh…

Did you know your MacBook has a sensor that knows the exact angle of the screen hinge?

It’s not exposed as a public API, but I figured out a way to read it and make it sound like an old wooden door.

Super funny that I once said Art and Science could raise humanity to the divine, and today there is a not-insignificant portion of humanity that wants to give up the chase on both.

I think writing for piano is teaching me how to draft. I've always been bad at writing stuff down (music or words) if it's not perfect yet, but I think something about how piano is multi-layered, but also must fit under two hands forces me to rewrite and refine more than I have before.

I'm an autistic woman whose way of communicating tends to be intellect-forward and overly blunt. I can try to soften it, but I often fail at that. I hate that this basically means I have very little chance at a successful career.
To be able to be "mean" you need to first be respected. as a man in this industry, you are default respected from the first day you put words on paper. as a woman in this industry, you have to build that respect every single damn day, like filling a cup with sand that has a hole in the bottom.

My ranking of the movements of the 9th:

3, 2, 4, 1

Maybe as a choral singer I should prefer the fourth, but the third is so exquisite and the second is so much fun! First is solid, of course, but not as memorable as the others.

On the one hand, I'm proud that I wrote something so aspirational it has lasted 200 years but on the other hand, I'm angry that 200 years have gone by and it's still aspirational.
