I don't know how many times this needs to be said, but apparently a lot: If you are not in a position to verify the accuracy of some synthetic text, the synthetic text is not useful/has a high potential to be misleading.

This is one of those cases.
The rationale I was given for AI Summaries *alongside* ordinary abstracts:

The law exists to protect us and yet Services Australia automated the removal of vulnerability flags in client accounts after a three month period without assessing if vulnerabilities still existed
Prof. Carney spoke extensively on vulnerability as a concept in policy and law and his closing remarks were that we are all at all times vulnerable in some respect or other, and this is why the law exists.
Terry Carney AO beginning his lecture touching on Robodebt, the Targeted Compliance Framework, the apportionment debt scandal, the NDIS budget assessment automation, think that should just about cover it in a tight hour or so.

NEW: A leaked document shows the key group behind the teen social media ban, 36 Months, was selling a $150,000 "UNGA Event Sponsorship" in the lead-up to Australia's UN event spruiking the policy.

It promised brands "influence" and "access" to heads of state.

"Not only does our system of “mutual” obligation rely on people continuing to stigmatise welfare as the moral failing of an individual (rather than it being the failure of a state and society that insists on people to “pay back” financial help for the “sin” of being unemployed)...
The welfare system isn't just on fire, it's burning out of control
A second report into the use of job-seeker mutual obligations is even more damning then the first – but will the government act?

This is a national shame and tragedy.

How many more First Nations people will die before the federal government acts?

Same society that sends hundreds of children aged 10 to 13 *to prison each year* (approximately 600 last time I looked) and forced thousands more through the criminal justice system?

A major news media conglomerate - historically blood-feud prejudiced against the current incumbent party - publishing agitprop across every mast head alongside roll-out events, such as 'lightning up bridges with slogans', is a very normal & unsuspicious thing to happen in our democracy.

No mental health orgs dispute that social media and teen mental health isn't an area for serious policy and concern. It is. But the social media ban is purely performative. It does nothing to address the actual existing problems & will create a series of new ones. Abysmal work by Labor.
