It made me furious, that exhibition - it still does. As does this ghoulish grave-robbing of dead celebrities’ likenesses, which didn’t begin with AI but which is steaming ahead ever more carelessly thanks to AI.

I think sometimes of a public art exhibition I went past this year of an artist’s collection of found photos. Each photo was of someone with their hand in front of their face, wishing to not be photographed. Blown up to huge size by a stranger, shown in public. We’ve become so uncaring of consent.

I don't know how many times to point out that is absolutely ghoulish and non-consensual and disgusting behavior.
To exploit the image of a dead woman who was also exploited in real life so you can live out your momentary fantasies of "what is possible" with AI is bad science journalism, also.
Sick.

Marilyn Monroe in Game of Thrones? AI Could Make It Happen Soon

Despite early, and familiar, copyright growing pains, Sora may be the prelude to AI-generated on-demand TV and movies

Screenshot includes an AI generated image of what looks like a human cross between Daenaerys Targaryen and Marilyn Monroe on the back of a dragon.

I wrote to Tony Burke about the closure of Meanjin, and finally received a reply from the office of Jason Clare, who had been forwarded the message because it was an issue for higher education, rather than the arts (!).

This is a wholly embarrassing and inadequate buck pass and response.

Yep, it’s crazy, it’s devoid of evidence based decisions, it’s ‘out of sight - out of mind’ and it’s all too common across Victoria.

‘Fuel reduction burning’ is a perfect example of thinking in words - empty words. The practice has little relation to reality on the ground.

FFMV plans to burn 60,000ha in Snowy NP.

'Just as decades of public pressure forced the logging industry under tighter rules & eventually brought it down under its own weight, we’ll only bring accountability to fire through the same relentless scrutiny & pressure.'

I’ve got a hat and two pairs of work pants from them and the pants have lasted longer than any other work pants I’ve had. A shame!

Ah shit I didn’t know that, thanks for the heads up ☹️

Happy weird flower season to all who celebrate! (Actually the wildflowers have been well down on last year in my part of the world, but here’s a spider orchid - I think Caladenia parva - from a reserve near my home)
A mostly green flower with long, streamer-like sepals each of which has a maroon stripe down the middle. The labellum of the flower is maroon at the front and white at the back, and to the sides of the labellum are two white and green comb-like structures. The flower is on the end of a long stalk rising from a single leaf. It looks like a weird alien. A magnified photo of the same flower described in the previous image, showing in particular a series of short maroon club-like stalks rising from the surface of the white part of the labellum.

God this is going to sound obnoxious but I'm doing it anyway: one of the most radical and genuinely bolshy things you can do right now is just fucking check stuff. Take a moment, find some sources, talk to some humans, corroborate stuff using independent pathways.

It is going out of fashion fast

This two-parter below is exactly why it's hard to make clothes in the United States.

Let's look at how much it costs to produce a button-up shirt in the US. 🧵
Someone on Twitter replies to me: "meh. buy american or stfu."

Two hours later, in a separate thread, the write: "$30 for a single button-up is ridiculous unless it is decent quality silk."

Israel has committed genocide. There is no more serious crime under international law. Culpability does not fade simply because there is now a ceasefire agreement, in the same way that a serial killer wouldn't be pardoned if they simply stop killing. There must be consequences.

Happy awkward baby bird season to all who celebrate (pictured: a recently fledged white-winged chough)
A black bird with slightly scruffy feathers and, fuzzy grey eyebrows, and a fleshy gape to its beak. It’s perched in the bare branches of a tree with its back to the camera and its head turned in profile.

One of Australia's unique avian voices - the song of a male Brown Songlark. A melodic jumble of electric buzzes & scratchy metallic notes, it has been described as sounding like a wheel squeaking on a rusty axle!

World's media today will be full of emotive stories about the release of ~20 Israeli hostages held by HAMAS for 2 years. There will be no similar stories about the ~2000 Palestinian hostages to be released by Israel, many imprisoned for much longer.

Racist, much? That's x100 racist.

this is the digital equivalent of individual pieces of fruit shrink-wrapped in plastic so that fossil fuel companies can sell the byproduct of oil production to plastic manufacturers

It is also the literal equivalent because it too creates demand for fossil fuels

People are spontaneously posting up near any laborers or street vendors they spot. Just saw a rapid responder guarding a man working on a building exterior. Many things are terrible today but lord, this stuff matters.

There are a tremendous number of ICE watchers out in Rogers Park this afternoon after some early morning abductions.

People are guarding churches and patrolling alleyways. Ran into Alderperson Hadden. First timers tell us they're primed and ready to use their whistles.
