I'm a big believer in going to protests but I am also a big believer in not signing up for protests.

More than either, I am an even bigger believer in having a protest backpack with PPE, fresh water bottles, a first aid kit, and a light change of clothes packed and in the closet.

Big tech can not generate or curate based on engagement as a value neutral metric. That is irresponsible, myopic, and unfortunately exactly how much of silicon valley operates. That's how you get to AI telling people exactly how to kill themselves and drafting their suicide notes for them.

Tiktok's algorithm picked up me liking a couple sad things when I was at a low point and rapidly intensified those offerings into a clear and direct pro-suicide feed. I absolutely guarantee you that this has worked on someone at some point who was doing worse than I was at that particular time.

Tangentially related: Tiktok used to serve me up pro-suicide videos about life being hopeless and there being only one way out. Once I realized that was not only a thing it could serve, but that the algorithm was directly and repeatedly serving it to me, I saw the evil in "value neutral" algos / AI.

I think it fucking sucks that I got such pushback on the idea having a large-ish audience on a social media platform means you’ve got some responsibility for how you use it. I don’t think that pushback is representative of much beyond the people doing it, but it sucks that it’s as loud as it is.
