This is a point the “AI inevitability” folks simply do not engage convincingly—We would not accept this technological caveat in any other context

“Our machine lets everyone make their own custom pharmaceuticals—but now every drug everywhere is maybe poison—better do your research!”

Yeah no thanks
Here's the reality this example illustrates:

It's not even just about people blindly trusting what ChatGPT tells them. LLMs are poisoning the entire information ecosystem. You can't even necessarily trust that the citations in a published paper are real (or a search engine's descriptions of them).

If you're looking for a payroll service, and are looking at Wave, DO NOT.

Look anywhere else. Hiring a necromancer to resurrect an accountant from 1902 is a better choice.

Also USPS didn't loss money because it doesn't make money because it's not a business and if never makes money to begin with.

It did however deliver over 112.5 billion pieces of mail in 2024 and that doesn't even include packages.
The USPS posting a NINE BILLION DOLLAR LOSS!!! sounds terrible. Certainly worse than if you said "USPS costs thirty dollars per person per year" even though that means the same thing and more accurately describes a government service

Fun with punctuation and caroling
A few years back, I couldn't figure out where the comma in "God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen" was supposed to go, so I hit myself in the face (and also did some singing).

Every use-case people think they "need" and LLM for is actually papering over a different issue. The teacher using ChatGPT to write narrative reports bc the demand is unreasonable & overwhelming *actually* needs more support and/or compensation or a reduction of demand. It's a LABOR issue.

I replaced my dynamic insertion ad income (which included ICE ads, yuck) with Patreon pledges in 2 months. I promised to turn off dynamic ads permanently for every listener, and was honest about what I made from the dynamic ads.

Instead of ad-free episodes, it's dynamic ad free for all.
And if you're a podcast that is airing those ICE ads (and doesn't want them), talk to @smartbitches.bsky.social . She just ran a successful campaign to turn those insert ads off.

I saw a meme last night about a generational divide marker of folks who cannot sit through videos and want the words typed out because they read faster than they can watch a video and I felt that deep in my heart. I'm happy for folks who love video, but I hate them. Give me text. Let me read.

You really have to read this thread. The genius of Tom Stoppard, the fragility of memory, the magic of theatre — and the glorious stubbornness of a researcher who would not stop.
Eleven years ago, I wrote to Tom Stoppard to ask about this coup de théâtre from 1949. It took me down an unexpected rabbit hole - in memory of Stoppard, here's what I found.

this reminds me of the Bridgerton response and how people were so confused that the main characters *changed* after season one, like writing essays about why that was a bad choice

which seems like a logical thing to them, but an *insane* thing to say to anyone who understands genre romance.
but this? shut the fuck up. guess what, my man, gorgeous young 22 year olds like to fuck. And queer people deserve love stories that are sexy and horny. a "chaste kiss" please be for real.

RIP Tom Stoppard. I read and saw Arcadia in college and it influenced my research interests in ways I'm still discovering.
“He combined more than 30 plays for the theatre with a steady stream of works for television and radio, and with screenplays including an adaptation of John le Carré’s The Russia House, Terry Gilliam’s Brazil and a joint credit for the Oscar-winning screenplay of Shakespeare in Love.”
Tom Stoppard, playwright of dazzling wit and playful erudition, dies aged 88
A theatrical sensation since the 1960s, whose dramas included Arcadia, The Real Thing and Leopoldstadt, Stoppard also had huge success as a screenwriter

Pope Leo XIV told students not to use artificial intelligence for homework, saying that AI ‘won’t stand in authentic wonder before the beauty of God’s creation.’

Ellen Harding Baker (1847-1886) was a US astronomer and teacher, known for her Solar System Quilt, used as a teaching aid in her lectures on astronomy.
She likely began creating the Solar System Quilt in 1876, and it apparently took her until 1883 to complete the project.
