I post about maps, GIS, and environmental chemistry, and now there’s also a lot of energy and Portland posts, some microblogging. Coauthor on a paper on bird population modeling. Reviews everywhere: "She's too direct."

Hello new followers!
I think I've been added to a chemistry-related starter pack? Thanks for following, I will likely post mostly about Portland stuff, maps, GIS, ecology, and some environmental chemistry.
Letting you know, incase that's not what you want to see!
I went to Gambit’s at The Lloyd Center to see if I could get any Silksong or Deltarune merch for my nephew. I was unsuccessful at that, but I did get two, uh, throw pillows for myself on sale!

I regret every joke I’ve made about how our elected officials were so old they didn’t know how to use a computer. I would give anything for another administration that doesn’t know how to use a computer

While I've lately been promoting the Independent Map Artists group I organize (mapartists.org), I haven't actually indulged in shamelessly promoting my own #map store for a long while.

Weird world maps, mountain sketch mugs, river transit maps, and more. somethingaboutmaps.com/Storefront

I used to live in a house built in 1908 and an apartment built in 1949. I thought it was an old building issue. I moved into a place built in 1995, thought it would be better. Nope! The previous residents left a whole bunch of ant traps behind and I've already used some of them.

I think this is an issue up the whole West Coast because I live in Oregon and I have already accepted that I will never win against the sugar ants. Living on the second floor? Never bring food into your bathroom? Doesn't matter, they will find you and move in. You can only temporary manage them.

Back when Instagram was still good, I subscribed to Sketchbox. When I created art with the monthly box I used the hashtag and I connected with a lot of arts. We learned a lot from each other and it lead to me developing a regular art habit.
What's a charming memory you have from the worst period of the pandemic?

This Georgian-Russian restaurant had an interesting juxtaposition of fancy table lamps and graffiti so I did a sketch while waiting for my food.

It’s good that Whamageddon 2025 starts on December 1st because some dude just drove down Newport Ave in San Diego blasting “Last Christmas” out of his car like we all want to hear it.

We won’t find that out on Bluesky though. We’ll find out walking out of the supermarket one day, all of a sudden car horns will be blaring. People hanging out their windows banging pots and pans. Randos dancing in the streets.
We will be like “WTF?.. Oh.”

I just looked at a map and I got really upset because it reminded me that Reno, NV is to the west of San Diego, CA.

The distance between not making art and making “bad” art is a lot bigger than making “bad” art and good art. You will get better, but making the “bad” art is still a good thing.
I'm old.

If you're not, listen to this.

Get a guitar or some drums, or a trumpet. Pick up a brush, a pencil, some clay or a welder.

Just make shit. It doesn't have to be good (eventually it will be) just make music, art or write or whatever.

It's literally never been more important.

Before I had my eyes fixed, I kind of didn't take into account how much packing for vision management stressed me out. Sure, I was wearing contacts, but I had to bring extras of them, in my purse not my bag in case my bag got lost. I had to bring enough contact solution. And also glasses.

People in the replies are talking about Stern, but this made me thing of the guys who had those W.O.W. bumperstickers that meant "whip e'm out Wednesday." Their names were Opie and Andy or something. A guy I went to HS with would repeat their sexist nonsense like it was being clever.
I survived the height of AM radio show culture which means every morning on my way to school I listened to 2 adult men debate a teen celebrity’s virginity, give concert tickets to the winner of a best fake orgasm noises contest, then prank call someone pretending to be a doctor giving terrible news.

I wish we could mute images. I never want to see that photo of Olivia Nuzzi in leopard print doing duck lips ever again.

For her slamming Biden for looking alien or whatever, her own face looks weird as hell.

Americans say anything about tea.
“You can resteap black tea leaves and bags a few times and it’s just as good.”
No you can’t. That is not true.

I was just saying the other day, to live in Colorado is to have been to a lot of places that were shot up.
I went to the CS Planned Parenthood back when it was at its way less secure location on the way to Old Colorado City.
