This is why i will judge you if you publish in Scientific Reports (by Nature).

In Earth Science (or at least in cimate/atmos/ocean) there is no particular significance to last author. The senior author (PI) is often second author, but just as often will be in the middle of the list.
Google Scholar has introduced a 'Sh-index' metric that scores papers higher if you are first or last author. Apart from the fact metrics are generally bad, this one explicitly punishes PIs who often collaborate, publishing with 2 or 3 equal PIs at the end of the list.

Like, I get it how evolution and natural selection worked to select for humans whose brains cannot just tune out their kids’ screaming.
All i’m saying is that once you introduce the interstate highway system you run the risk of starting to naturally select in the other direction.

honestly I don't really mind writing the 15 page research summary (though 10 pages would be better for both writing and reviewing). It is, inter alia, a helpful conduit to plan out a project.

the amount of time we spend trying to raise $$$ for our research is absolutely immense and results in a huge amount of wasted time. BUT there is a limited amount of money, so they have to have some method of distributing it. not sure what the best way to do it is.
