i'd only change one thing about olympic curling and it is that a team must complete 2 beers per person by the 7th end, though the team can choose whether how it will be divided, from a 2x4 to an 8x1 "workhorse" beerskip.

has America actually lived up to that founding myth? of course not. good gods we've fucked it up, so hard and so often. but it's that aspirational myth and the dream of getting there that have fueled all the struggles for progress and how we've gotten improvement. run the damn ball

Would love to see it hit 10K and make the cut. I know we’ve got enough people.

This is sort of a throughline in cases of excessive force used by law enforcement. The civilian is supposed to perfectly adhere to some unwritten code of conduct; the armed professional supposedly trained for such situations is only human & must be given lattitude if they succumb to fear and rage.
The administration is insisting that its masked goons are so emotionally stunted that words can launch them into a murderous rage.

"Our professionals are just ordinary people so ordinary people better act professionally around them, or else."

It really makes you wonder whether blanketing the walls of federal offices with cable news TVs was money well spent.
Duckworth on Senate Republicans: "I gotta be honest with you. When I talk to a few of my colleagues, they had not even seen the videos. It's almost like they put blinders on. They're uneasy."

Following the Kent State massacre in May 1970, a Gallup poll showed that 58% of Americans thought the shootings were justified. The night *before* the killings, Ohio's GOP governor described the student protesters this way: "They're the worst type of people that we harbor in America."

I fought in Afghanistan as a Marine.

Danes were in Helmand before Marines were.

43 Danes gave the last full measure of devotion because the U.S. asked and we had been attacked.

I’m ashamed this man is the commander in chief. This isn’t how you treat friends who bled with you.
Trump on NATO: "I've always said, will they be there if we ever needed them? That's really the ultimate test. I'm not sure of that. We've never needed them. They'll say they sent some troops to Afghanistan and this or that. And they did. They stayed a little back, off the front lines."

NATO did not "stay a little back, off the front lines."

Danish, British and Estonian troops served in Helmand, and Canadian forces in Kandahar - the two most dangerous Afghan provinces.

Denmark, UK, Estonia & Canada suffered amongst the highest per‑capita soldier death rates when defending the US.

This gets at one of the biggest problems with American left-of-center political culture: the default to subsidies.

Not only is it simply incorrect, as the thread shows, but it leads to a zero-sum worldview, that for someone to gain, someone has to lose.
First: Supply matters. To decarbonize, you need green energy infrastructure. For universal health care, you need a lot of doctors. And you can't buy your way out of supply constraints solely through subsidies. You need subsidy *and* increased supply. rooseveltinstitute.org/publications...
Lessons from YIMBYism: Taking “Abundance” Back to Its Fundamentals
Lessons from YIMBYism examines how supply-side reforms, public investment, and state capacity can make progressive social policy work as intended.
