It is also worth saying that everyone who mocks some supposedly fake discipline like “gender studies“ or “Africana studies“ is also really excited about degree programs in things like “AI prompt engineering.”

Nothing wrong with a “fake” discipline if it flatters your world view and bank account!
It is worth saying that putting “Africana studies” in scare quotes as if it’s a ridiculous concept is not a political argument. It’s just racism. “Africa is not worthy of a major” is the implication. Yeah dude you’re just racist. (From Gerard Baker at the WSJ today)

(there’s a lot to be said for 1776 as a revolution-era musical anyway, but its philadelphianess is up there lmao)
it was not at all relevant to my research, but i for sure footnoted it anyway lmao
in the annotated libretto, lin manuel miranda points this out—iirc he ranks nyc behind boston at the time too, but its been since i wrote my ma thesis in 2018 so i cant confirm

My congratulations to all Baseball Perverts. It was their "super bowl" last night and it seems they all had a very bad time (in their culture that's how you have a good time)

Did not expect one of the best paragraphs I’d read about baseball would come from an Irish newspaper

“In my country, South Korea, literature must be easy, with no exceptions. A reader must grasp the meaning at once. Otherwise, the book won’t sell. It won’t be read. Poetry, too, must be simple.”

There’s no point in denying it anymore: literature as we know it is well on its way to becoming a lost art.

Since we’re talking BUNNICULA I need everyone to know that the audiobook is read by Victor Garber and he truly out-gays himself. Harold and Chester absolutely come across as the fussy middle-aged couple they were obviously meant to be.
If you see this, post a vampire that isn’t Dracula.
it’s wild that rodgers and hammerstein put out a press release 80+ years ago saying “we have invented a brand new thing, the integrated musical play” and that’s been basically uncritically reprinted ever since
