before the trump admin, this would have been one of the biggest political scandals in history and alone would be solid grounds for impeachment and removal.
Trump rages that Henry Cuellar didn’t pay him back for a pardon by switching parties, blasting Cuellar for a “lack of LOYALTY.”

In other words, Trump admits he was trying to use his pardon power to buy Republicans a House seat.

the idea that a handful of conservative legal scholars have an understanding that should supersede a settlement affirmed my generations of american is astoundingly arrogant, and the idea that trump — or any president — can unilaterally overturn that settlement is just despotism

also, let’s say wurman is right. well, we have had nearly 160 years of unlimited birthright citizenship that has been affirmed again and again by generations of Americans. whatever the original intent, that is what the birthright clause *means*.

this gets to the fundamental lawlessness. the difference between law as a game and law as a tool of government.

birthright citizenship is the law. nothing has changed. the documents are the same. if that can change based on *nothing*, you don't have a real constitution in the first place.

I'm not sure this is true, the techno fascist cluster seems to have nostalgia for an imagined mythological past that the AI god will somehow restore. It's just that past is something like a medieval pastiche out of fantasy lit or the gender politics of Revenge of the Nerds.
The phrase might feel wrong because "fascism" isn't quite right - it's usually associated with reactionary nostalgia. But "authoritarianism" is too long. We don't have a noun for a future-oriented version of fascism. That's your challenge!

Here's a breakdown in case any words here are useful.

Really is quite a thing how, after spending my life shrieking about abortions murdering babies, these fuckers have thrown their total support behind a guy who's arranging for thousands of newborns to die in unimaginably horrific ways.

I do not care for it and that's all I can say within ToS.

Brave thread.
I’m actually terrified to do this, but here goes.

One request. You do not comment until you read the entire thread. And you are respectful when you do. If not I will either restrict you or block you depending on how hateful you are.

Great, glad we’re on the same page, let’s begin.

It really cannot be stressed enough that if we don’t have birthright citizenship we don’t have citizenship.

The only Americans who have any proof of citizenship are either naturalized adults or the tiny fraction of natural born citizens who are born abroad. Everyone else has birthright citizenship.

We need to talk about the massive loophole that the Supreme Court just carved into election law over the shadow docket—giving states a free pass to enact patently unconstitutional voting rules within nearly *one year* of an election. A stunning new limit on judicial review. slate.com/news-and-pol...

I think this dovetails well with the anti-corruption message Dems should concentrate on.

How much money has Trump, his family, and his lackeys looted from the taxpayers already? And SCOTUS—in the tank for corrupt pols generally and Trump specifically—will be a primary obstacles to getting it back.
The Roberts Six have thoroughly politicized the Court and turned it into a reliable arm of the RNC.

Democrats should have no reservations about calling them out for it, demanding resignations from these bought-off hacks and running on a promise to enact sweeping reforms.
Democrats need to lay the groundwork for reform by attacking the villains on the Supreme Court - loudly, angrily, personally, relentlessly. And they should start now.

You aren’t going to believe this. But there’s an important distinction between detaining someone as a law enforcement action in an interdiction and summarily killing them.
If the US Coast Guard stops a ship in international waters and seizes their cocaine, is that a war crime? The ship has not done anything illegal. Should we prosecute the Coast Guard Captain for piracy?

Pretty fucking tiring having to be grateful every time the most likely scenario plays out and it turns out that the violent nutjob was, in fact, a violent rightwing nutjob, because in the rare situation where the domestic terrorist is a leftwing nutjob, the news suddenly cares.
It's a good thing the DC pipe bomber is a rightwing MAGA lunatic who bought into the lies that the GOP and its media poisoned the public with. Otherwise, Noah Rothman would have had to add entire new chapters to his upcoming book on the plague of political violence coming from... the left.
