I like safe streets, infill housing and trees. Find more ways to say yes. YIMBY, MeFite, Smithie.

People who think that advocates for safe mobility infrastructure are politically powerful need to understand our streets would look very very different if that were in fact true.

Sad death of CBS News as actual journalism

And a reminder that CECOT is a human rights travesty, and everyone up and down the Trump admin involved in illegally sending people there belong in The Hague.

There is a tremendous opportunity for a brand new generation of media outlets to rise up right now because many news outlets that spent decades painstakingly building their credibility are seeing it torched by bootlickers with incredible speed.

Fwiw I think the “apologize for being white” thing is very clearly about making sure white people don’t feel an obligation to alleviate past injustices or make society fairer. Ultimately to do that you have to raise taxes and the billionaires holding Vance’s leash don’t want that.

Billionaire futurism is premised on selling a future that never comes to people instead of meeting their needs now. Wealth is, to be Derridean, always already there, yet never there.

This is a surgical dismantling of yet another dumb Matt Yglesias argument by a former clean energy exec and current Representative. This is the sort of thing that should make people stop listening to people like Yglesias.

Read the whole thing.
This Yglesias piece in the NYT is horrifically bad. Almost every "fact" it cites is provably false. At best it is cocktail party banter from a pundit who knows nothing of energy. At worst, it was cut/paste from oil industry talking points. So, a rebuttal: www.nytimes.com/2025/12/18/o...

None of this is “good faith political debate,” and it’s not a coincidence that all these outlets are suddenly interested in the same “discussion” at the same time.

Reminder that naturalized citizens are people who jumped through every hoop, did all the paperwork, passed the test, and swore an oath to this country. They did it all “the right way” and still Republicans want to kick them out.
New attack on immigrants: the Trump administration is demanding that Citizenship and Immigration Services field offices start drumming up “100-200 denaturalization cases per month.”

Normally a naturalized citizen cannot be stripped of citizenship unless they committed fraud on their application. 🎁

Conservative anti-urbanism has always been in large part about social and sexual control, particularly of women. In small towns you can be shamed for having socially-unapproved sex. In a large, anonymous city with cheap housing, you can have multiple partners without judgment or social consequence.
I think on some level conservative NIMBYs oppose more housing because they dislike the idea of young people having more choices in how their lives are going to unfold

Now there is an effective metaphor.
"AI is the asbestos in the walls of our technological society, stuffed there with wild abandon by a finance sector and tech monopolists run amok. We will be excavating it for a generation or more."

This piece on AI by Cory Doctorow is spectactular.

Some day, hopefully, people will talk in the exact same way about the smell of car exhaust.
for anyone young enough not to remember -- YES everything smelled like shit. Every public restaurant reeked, every used car reeked, all used clothing reeked. Every piece of furniture or appliance that came out of a bar or restaurant was covered in a thick layer of tar and never stopped stinking.

It’s never been about protecting children. It’s always been about people being props for powerful monsters.

Support trans people. Support victims. Support personal autonomy.
