Are they not treating each other as prey? Or as a rival? But never take it as far as actually hurting each other? Or do you think cats who play fight intend to do real damage?

It's a very basic form of "pretending" but I think "acting while deliberately subverting the expected result" could apply

I remember someone once scolding me that advocating for cats to be indoor-only is “classist” because not everyone can afford toys to keep them entertained inside. I was like madam their favorite things are sticks, crinkly paper, and cardboard boxes. Literal garbage.
