It’s hard to convey just how much Chicagoans are mobilizing against ICE. Don’t want to downplay the harm, or make it seem like a fair fight. But in neighborhoods across this city, ICE is getting chased by people blowing whistles and shouting. People are running TOWARD ICE to protect their neighbors.

I will vote for whoever promises to tear this down.

Janet Mills being yet another boring and uninspiring septuagenarian is a separate issue from Oyster Guy’s problems. I don’t understand why people are trying to combine these two. Thinking Oyster Guy’s time is done doesn’t mean you’ve over the moon for Mills, let alone be an operative for the olds.

The elimination of SED's international-affairs subdivision could also have serious consequences. The layoffs will make it harder for the U.S. to help other countries with cyber defense, enlist foreign assistance while investigating attacks, and exchange intelligence and best practices.

The writing has been on the wall for SED since the beginning of the Trump administration. It's one of three divisions not explicitly authorized by Congress, and Trump proposed dramatic cuts in his FY2026 budget.

As staffers prepare to depart, there's no plan to pass on some important work.

Errol Weiss, chief security officer at the Health Information Sharing and Analysis Center, told me the SED cuts would "create a dangerous void," adding, "This is exactly the wrong time to be pulling back federal support."

The Trump administration didn't warn at least some of its main critical infrastructure partners about these layoffs.

"I’m still trying to fathom this," said an energy-industry executive who first learned about the cuts when I asked them for comment.
