Worked with a dev once who was VERY resistant to any sort of feedback for this exact reason. Finally had someone play it who said they assumed the story was about something it VERY much was not intended to be, and I think that was the shock he needed to realize the importance of feedback and testing
I see devs get prickly about playtesting because they're afraid of being "focus grouped" or having the edges sanded off.
The point of playtesting is to see if what you intended was what the player actually experienced, and there's no other way to find this out than putting it in front of someone.
