Today in 1964, 22 miles from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, the first of two underground nuclear tests was conducted as part of Project Dribble (a joint DOD-AEC effort under the VELA Uniform program) to ascertain whether nuclear explosions in salt domes could be detected and accurately measured.

I’ve read and traveled far and wide, and imho the class of people who have the best theory of mind for people in their out groups aren’t like counterinsurgency experts, or psychotherapists, but people who are experienced in interfaith dialogue and have basic religious literacy.

one of the reasons I was substantially ahead of the curve during the pandemic was that I treated China as a real place, and assumed that the Chinese government and scientists as making decisions for real reasons - not always good ones, but real ones!
