the cause of any kind of broad social safety net expansion in this country is bleak because middle and upper middle classes shaping public opinion (left, right, and center) all think they’re already overtaxed and suffering.
Right - any serious increase in spending will have to come from a broad tax base, inclusive of the middle class.
Unfortunately the (false!) narrative that the middle class is suffering makes it hard to pass such a tax increase.
