Look, LLM use in academia isn't just students. You need to be speaking clearly with your collaborators about your writing standards from the beginning. Make people say out loud that they don't write their own articles anymore.

From “disruptive” innovation (courtesy decades of tax-payer funded academic research privatized by corporations and patents) to underwriting markets, capitalism is the kid who never grows up, never leaves your damn house but claims he is a grown adult and doesn’t need to follow your stupid rules.

A *huge* vaccine victory. I've been writing on this for years; Australia has seen remarkable progress in cervical cancer prevention with the HPV vaccine. I love seeing science triumph like this.
Australia recorded ZERO cases of cervical cancer in women under 25 for the first time since they started tracking the cancer in the 80s.

This is the power of vaccines.

The HPV vaccine is extremely effective at preventing cancer.

Viruses can be oncogenic. Get your vaccines and protect yourself!
newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination
Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain ‘instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

When I was at NC state, I had lunch with a visiting scholar from Sweden who was visiting US universities for the first time. He described his experience as touring “hedge funds with football teams.”
That is so much money
5:45 pm on Thanksgiving Eve?

Now THIS is how you news dump.

Okay, there needs to be a Grammy category for this. And this needs to be the winner.
What do you get when you mix the best selling single of the king of pop with the lately departed queen of MAGA?

This is what we get: a parody of Billie Jean about #mtg #maga #marjorietaylorgreene 🎶🕺

Entrecosto com batatas instead of a turkey dinner.

Tarte de amêndoa instead of pecan pie.

Thankful to live in Lisbon, Portugal now.

I read a tip earlier this month that I'm going to start implementing–when you purchase something online and they require you to sign up for their mailing list, note in one of your name boxes the website you're filing the form out on. Then you know who sold your data when your inbox gets clogged.

Pretty wild: I just learned that, in terms of Altmetric, this paper became the most impactful Political Science article of the past five years, and the 4th most impactful EVER. 😳

Altmetric is... well, Altmetric. But still, kind of surreal.
Misinformation isn't random - it's strategic. 🧵

In the first cross-national comparative study, we examine 32M tweets from politicians.

We find that misinformation is not a general condition: it is driven by populist radical right parties.

Dear foreign nationals in war-torn countries, terrorism hot-spots, and amidst our enemies:

If you help the United States, we’ll fuck you over and abandon you. Not the individual servicepeople or intelligence officers — they’ll fight for you. I mean the depraved, soulless leadership of the nation.
So now they’re going to be doing individualized re-review of tens of thousands of Afghan evacuees’ cases on TOP of the re-review of 200,000+ refugees who entered under Biden?

"a single person of this demographic may have committed a crime, therefore we must punish the entire demographic" is a policy response you may recognize from fascist governments dedicated to ethnic cleansing elsewhere.
It didn’t even take 6 hours.

Some are suggesting you deliberately write inaccurate or confusing alt text, because they say this confuses AI scrapers that are analyzing images.

The purpose of alt text is to help people who cannot see the image. Deliberately misrepresenting the image is a gross misuse of alt text. Don't do it.

Needless to say, if your grand bargain is "oil companies get their big pollution pipeline but in exchange they also get a ton of federal subsidies for their unproven offset technology" that's not actually a grand bargain, it's just a shitload of oil subsidies lol

Apparently, in her sniffing adventures today, my dog managed to get what smells like cat piss on her head 🤢

It's only been a week since her last bath, but I guess we get to go do this... She hates the bath and thinks it's a horrible torture, but omg she reeks!

This.

Whenever local government reviews the library budget and asks, "Why should we give you money?"

We want the library to be able to say, "Because we provide a valuable service used by many people!"

Libraries are like muscles, using them more makes them stronger. 💪
Anybody who is like “Piracy is activism!”—trust me, supporting your local library is about 1000% more effective activism, and it’s still free for you and authors still get paid!

Trump envoy Steve Witkoff has been outed as a Russian asset. This is traitorous stuff.
Steve Witkoff helped Russia derail Ukraine’s access to Tomahawk missiles. He tipped off the Kremlin about Zelensky’s U.S. visit, giving Moscow time to arrange a call that convinced Trump to block the deal. Witkoff actively works against Ukraine’s defense, in coordination with Putin’s regime.

Periodic reminder: the vaccine efficacy of the pertussis vaccine drops below 50% at 4.5 years. You should be getting a Tdap booster every 5 years, not every 10. It is especially vital if you have contact with pregnant people or infants too young to be vaccinated.
After two infants died, the Louisiana Dept of Health under the leadership of the new incoming deputy director of the CDC, delayed notifying the public for months of a whooping cough outbreak. Instead, he ordered DOH to stop promoting vaccines. Pertussis is currently a national health crisis.
Louisiana officials waited months to warn public of whooping cough outbreak
After a whooping cough outbreak killed two infants, Louisiana health officials waited months to officially alert physicians or do public outreach. That's not the typical public health response.

With Black Friday approaching, there will inevitably be well-intentioned talk that these deals are only possible because workers are denied a livable wage.

Don't buy into this. It's not low prices vs. fair pay. It's the demand for ever-higher profits and shareholder returns that forces deprivation.
