Schmidt on Ritsu Doan: "He’s a great example for the development of players. If you have the right mentality and also the quality, this is the progress you have to make."

Schmidt: "After (getting this offer from the #JLeague) I got a feeling for what I wanted to do. I saw myself in this project. I thought I could deliver what they want. I can share my experience, I like this project, I like Japanese culture and also their football."

Schmidt: "Before I went to Benfica, I decided together with my family that it would be my last club as a coach for now. Of course I still love football and I’d like to be involved in football, but not in the daily schedule of a football club."

And the man of the hour is here!

By Amaterasu’s grace I’ve made it with 10 minutes to spare and they’ve even put out coffee.

Supposed to be on my way to Roger Schmidt’s press conference about his new role as the J.League’s Global Football Advisor, but my train line had a jumper so I’m stuck at my station waiting to see when I will be able to go anywhere.

Random thought: ANA pulled pitchside advertising from these two Japan friendlies in light of the Kageyama incident.

How much commercial exposure did they miss out on by not having a pitchside presence at the Brazil game?

For all my Scottish followers, I gave Clyde 1 some comments on Rangers managerial candidate Kevin Muscat that you'll be able to hear at... some point!

"...toward accomplishing our goal, and I think that's a great part of our culture. The soccer community remembers the disappointment we've felt and has learned from it, and what players in the past did has connected with the present and allowed us to be competitive globally."

I asked Moriyasu about this game and his perspective as a former player on what tonight's result means:

"The result was 0-3 but it felt like a much bigger loss. But when Japan, not only wrt soccer but in various fields, sets a target, we build on past results and try to figure out how to improve...

Before today, the Japan men's national team record against Brazil stood at P13, W0, D2, L11, including a 1995 3-0 defeat at Anfield in which current manager Haijme Moriyasu featured.

Down 2-0 at half-time, Japan won 3-2, with ex #lfc player Takumi Minamino starting the comeback.

Moriyasu jokes about how media questions have shifted from the team not being able to score any goals in the September window to the team giving away two goals in each of the October games, suggesting it shows how Japan have worked on improvements.

Moriyasu: "We’ve never beaten Brazil before, but it’s by building on the efforts of (national team) players that came before us that we were able to win today.”

Moriyasu enters to a light round of applause.

Ancelotti asked about Japan's strengths and its ambition of winning the World Cup; he only responds to the first half, saying "Japan is a very strong team. In the second half they played very well; they pressed high and disrupted our buildup.”
aishiterutokyo.bsky.social
Ancelotti says there was "a lot to learn" from tonight's defeat and that "It's better to make mistakes like this now than at the World Cup."

FULL TIME

Japan 3-2 Brazil

In their 14th meeting, the student has beaten the teacher.

A truly historic result for the Japanese game against an opponent it has sought to match on the pitch for more than half a century.

the roars for each clearance are as loud as they were for the goals

The fourth official holds up a big '6' so that's how many minutes of Japan parking the bus we're going to get

Attendance announced at 44,920, might be top five among the biggest crowds I have seen at this stadium.
aishiterutokyo.bsky.social
Both teams sending out triple subs with about 16 minutes to go.

In 14 matches between the two sides this is just the fifth in which Japan has scored - and the first time they have scored three goals, the previous high mark coming in a 2-2 draw at the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup (RIP).

JAPAN 3-2 BRAZIL WHAT A REMARKABLE GAME THIS HAS BECOME

Ueda makes up for that open net miss in the first half by banging it in with his head. Scenes.

I took a shot w/ that jumper because I am pretty sure you're at the Kabuki Boys banner, maybe I underestimated where the LED boards start to curve because I thought it was near the 'KAB' rather than the 'BOYS'
