This is kinda funny. A nerdy patent lawyer was unhappy with the options for home automation products, so he started his own company as a side hustle - with all open source firmware and explicit instructions for hacking. He has bulbs, plugs, and switches so far.

Aversion to complexity is a problem an individual has, that society doesn't need to and shouldn't cater to. There's a lot of shit that's too complex for me to understand but I just accept it because the smarter people say it's true. They also need to be comfortable with their own level of intellect.
