And remember: you must never, under any circumstances, despair. To hope and to act, these are our duties in misfortune. -- Boris Pasternak, Doctor Zhivago Skeets are my own+do not reflect views of employers past or present.

This whole thread is incredibly important for young scholars. We all get rejected. The very first line of the first review of the first ever paper I submitted to a journal read:

"I strongly oppose publication of this manuscript in [Journal name] and any other journal"
catherinedevries.bsky.social
During my PhD, I got a rejection that stung:

“This paper is looking for a needle in a haystack, and this should give the author pause to question if this entire exercise is worth it.”

My PhD wasn’t Animal Farm, but still this stung.

"Impressionism is a scientists' art," said a friend.

"How so?"

"A brush is a blunt instrument, like all of science's. We must be honest in letting it capture only what it does. It's only by doing so, by *not* trying to force detail, that we may reveal details well beyond the brush's own capacity."

who called it "vision, mission, objectives, strategies, and actions" (VMOSA) and not "shared aspirations, mission, objectives, strategies, and actions" (SAMOSA), smh

Lafley and Martin's Playing to Win. pales next to Rumelt's Good Strategy, Bad Strategy; Trimble and Govindarajan's Ten Rules for Strategic Innovators.

to each their own, of course!

so annoying when your boss orders you to read a business book and it's mostly scatterbrained pablum but then on page 142 you find a decent idea that justifies the assignment in spite of the puffery and dreck and you're only halfway through

#MSH45 | Richard Lasher
You've been at a job long enough to know a decent colleague to chat with.

The more you get to know them, the more they share. What's fact or fiction? You don't know, but you listen.

Then there's one story that's so over the top—a bona fide lie. But then, a photo appears.
A red Ford Pinto hatchback angles across a narrow gravel forest service road, a blue enduro motorcycle on a rear hitch carrier. Tall firs frame the view. Beyond them, a towering ash cloud from a pyroclastic density flow billows skyward. Photo by Richard Kent Lasher, May 18, 1980.

yes, and this perspective is parasitic and self-limited in the sense that it is ONLY possible in a world that rejects it--ppl could not achieve that perspective w/o the socioecon+sci/tech stacks that enable it in the first place, &are based on shared sense making
