Retro style comics book page.

Panel 1: Richard Clayton Cold, Doctor Omega, and Southland Brown sit around a table looking at maps.

Caption: Doctor Omega's ship, the Cosmos, can travel by air, land, or under the sea. The Doctor, Richard Clayton Cold, and Southland Brown discuss which is the best route to the Amphibimen/Verdissia marchlands.

Panel 2: The Cosmos drives over grasslands. Blue ape-like warriors mounted on coyote-horses surround it.

Caption: Travel by land would take them through the lands of the Ghoulians, fierce warriors and staunch military allies of the Amphibimen.

Panel 3: The Cosmos traveling by air over a desert. Flying around it are men with pterodactyl wings. They are holding long spears with their feet and have guns mounted on their helmets.

Caption: While travel by air would inevitably lead to a confrontation with the airborne army of Pterrod.

The Pterrodans are officially neutral in the Great War due to a non-aggression pact with Rabazar, but are nevertheless tied economically to the Amphibimen. Furthermore, they would probably not take kindly to any craft emerging from the territory of Darr, their ancient enemies.

Panel 4: A hand points to a map.

Caption: Brown, ever the smuggler, suggests they use the Cosmos' submarine capabilities to travel through the Sea of Monsters and up the river to land near their destination, evading detection.

It just occurred to me that while I was concentrating on mutants like Magneto, any government that became aware of Doug Ramsey's existence would immediately try to black bag him.

Sad news everyone, I’m officially pulling the plug on Brightsiders, my super fan podcast for the 2017 movie Bright. I still feel like there were many interesting topics left to discuss but after 7 years of weekly episodes I’ve learned that no one has ever listened to the show.

I like that, and also the design teams really laying into it with the Dwarven aesthetics. The weird hairstyles and everything they make being formed into angular shapes* - that's good stuff.

*Including, somehow, a bow.
Closeup of Kili's bow, a prop from the Hobbit movies. It's as squared off as possible it can be while still remaining even remotely functional as a bow.

The Hobbit movies suck, particularly 2 and 3. Which is a shame, because those are the ones with Lee Pace as Thraunduil in them, and he's great.

Playing him as a disdainful fashion model was an A+ choice.

Honestly, the best way to make an artist’s day is by being very specific about what you like about a piece. Geek out a lil. Gush over how they use line, color, texture. Every mark is layed down by the artist, so if you can connect with those little moments, it helps the artist feel seen.

Oh, man, Drew Struzan's departed us.

You know all the hits, of course; the man was a legend. Here's a rejected (!?!?) poster he did for STAR TREK V.

Tell children today that, they won't believe you.

Hello #PortfolioDay

I'm Philip Rice / Spearhafoc. I do a pulp pastiche webcomic called The Apex Society, done in a variety of styles.
Comic book page in a style reminiscent of Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. Closeup of a purple skinned man. A froglike humanoid alien sits on a throne surround by his consorts (of the same species). A Flash Gordon-like hero with red hair poses triumphantly as an Asian woman holds onto him and an old Asian man fiddles with a device behind him. Characters mounted on wolf-horse hybrids approach a scifi city of spires. Cartoony comic book page. A dark skinned man looks at his own reflection in a hand-held piece of shattered glass. A Gordon approaches him from behind.

He's turned to stone as a Popeye-like character punches another Gordon and a man throws a grenade.

An explosion goes off and he see a gun firing at the Gordon that turned the black man to stone. A retro-style comic book page with stylized flat colouring. Wealthy elites at a restaurant gossip about a man and his date, who they claim is a sex worker. Manga style black and white page. Two large warriors with fox tails and elaborate haircuts harass a female fighter pilot. In the background, others of their kind battle ornithopters.

In the second panel, a flying fox-man looks down in shock to see the two warriors from the previous panel stretched out and twisted around each other. The female pilot is also shocked.

get the impression that the answer to "if 'AI' can never flip burgers, sew a t-shirt, pick strawberries or wipe an old person's ass, does that mean that is the critical work that defines humanity and everyone who has that kind of job deserves to be compensated extremely well?" is "also, somehow: no"
