Welcome new followers!

I’ve been described as a border collie with opposable thumbs who can do math (& swears a lot). I post about many things, including astrophysics, other sciences, politics, stuff I’ve made, teaching, complaints, occasional medieval history, Irish stuff, NYC, travel, bears…

In twelve days, New Yorkers will begin to cast their ballots and face a stark choice.

A choice between democracy and oligarchy. Between a city you can afford or more of the same. Between the hope of a brighter future or a broken past.

We will choose the future.

For #BlackHistoryMonth pharmaceutical chemist Alice Ball (1892-1916) developed 1st effective treatment for leprosy. 👩🏾‍🔬🧪🐡 #histsci Though her life was cut tragically short, her research saved 1000s from exile & painful, ineffective lifelong treatment for leprosy, & she was a trailblazer for 🧵1/
My linocut portrait of pharmaceutical chemist Alice Ball, a young Black woman in a lab coat, printed in indigo. Below her is the chemical reaction for Ball’s Process in violet. Above and around her is a branch of chalmoogra with green leaves and yellow fruit.

Day 26 #SciArtSeptember prompt forage. My #linocut of #botanist Isabella Aiona Abbott (1919-2010), 🧪🐡👩🏻‍🔬 #histsci renown algae expert, celebrated seaweed cook, devoted teacher & mentor, expert on Hawaiian ethnobotany, the first Indigenous Hawaiian woman to earn a doctorate in science & the first woman
My linocut portrait of Isabella Aiona Abbott in indigo on cream coloured paper. She’s facing forward at a table in a shirt and sweater vest with a sheet with algae samples on the table. In my print, she is surrounded by algae of the Pacific, all of which appeared in Abbott's research publications, including several species she discovered, or based on images of specimen she personally collected or whose traditional use as food she documented. The algae are in pinks, khaki green and rust.

Yeah, that’s exactly my fear (tho hubs would probably not trip that wire, being white & a native English speaker… but he DID carry his green card or visa as long as he had one bc he was concerned about this law… & I’ve got plenty of friends & students who WOULD trip that wire…).

Oh, 💯. I have heard some folks, however, say that the ACA is a useless corporate giveaway that did nothing important for people or our system. Which is what I’m pushing back on.

So like… what’s to prevent them from hassling a naturalized citizen in the same way? After all, they don’t know you’re naturalized without proof? I’ve been debating whether maybe hubs should carry his US passport?

Wow, wow, wow. This has always been legally possible but the law has virtually never been enforced — and now this is the SECOND case I've heard of in the last month (first involving a person with a green card) of a noncitizen being charged for failure to carry their papers.

THIS!!!

No, ACA isn’t perfect, but just straight up repealing it would kill a LOT of people.

I like to remind people about lifetime limits and the refusal of insurers to sell coverage to people with preexisting conditions.

The ACA has issues. But those 2 things alone make it worth saving and fixing.

A whole troop of Girl Scouts went full single-payer when they realized a couple of their friends weren't getting treatment because they couldn't afford it. "There should be a law!"

Warming waters cause corals to “bleach” when these organisms expel symbiotic algae that provide nutrients, oxygen & vibrant colors.

The latest global bleaching event - researchers estimate >84% of the planet's coral ecosystems have been affected since Jan 2023 - has made it clear the crisis is now.

The entire incident is infuriating and terrifying. She’s a Latina woman who was working a service job. On her way home late at night, with her headphones in, she was detained for an hour by masked federal agents who wouldn’t give her their names.
Maria Greeley, 44, had just finished working a double shift at the Beach Bar on Ohio Street
earlier this month when she said she was surrounded by three federal agents who grabbed her, forced her hands behind her back and zip tied her.
Headphones in, Greeley had been focused on getting home to her two dogs for a walk.
Instead, she said she was detained by masked agents who did not answer when she asked for names. They questioned her for an hour, she said.

Depending on the ink, rubbing alcohol is quite effective (I once used a lot of qtips & a LOT of rubbing alcohol to get out pretty much all the ink a certain small person put on a grandparent’s favorite upholstered chair…)

A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.

If you're wondering whether or not to get a flu shot, I didn't get one in time, and I just had a fever dream where I was in the Drew Carey Show because several days ago I was on the Wikipedia page for the Drew Carey Show. You don't have to do this to yourself.
