I understand why maritimers come to Toronto and think we’re unfriendly, but also…

every summer we go to my husband’s small hometown out east and he drives around on high alert in case he fails to wave to someone he knows, cause his parents will have heard about it before we get there.

Another thing I have been exploring this year is combining other media with cyanotype. This is a unique hand made multimedia print with linocuts and cyanotype on watercolour paper (11” x 14”). On top of the cyanotype print of Canada goldenrod, I made a lino block print of the wildflower 🐡🧪🧵

I love the whimsical terms of venery for groups of animals and have an ongoing series of #linocut #termsOfVenery prints. 🧪🐡
For my linocut parliament of owls I made two columns of local owls - like government an which the loyal opposition in this parliament in a tree printed in black against a dark grey evening sky! It reads “A parliament of owls” in gothic lettering and the word Owl is made with an eye and feathers. Right to left and top to bottom the owls are: Northern saw-whet, Eastern screech, Barred, long-eared, Barn and Great Horned owl. They are printed in shades of brown on white chine collé paper on the grey background.

The centre of the flower is orange with black outlines and some yellow bits and occupies the lower right corner. Radiating out are several pink and violet petals. The background is green. On top of the centre of the flower is a transverse-banded flower fly facing the lower right corner. It is yellow and black striped with translucent wings and red-brown eyes.

My carved Lino block shows two apple blossoms the size of salad plates with two flat edges that meet at a corner and the other edges tracing the petals. It’s sitting on a green cutting mat with half inch grid in white. The block is tinted from use. The petals are pinkish, the stamens pale green and the pollen rusty orange.

My lino block print of a charming Grimpoteuthis octopus, one of a genus of pelagic cirrate (finned) octopods known as the dumbo octopuses. The fins reminded scientists of ears on the elephant in Disney’s 1941 film Dumbo. Hence their common name dumbo octopuses. The print is 9.25” by 12.5” on delicate ivory Japanese washi paper with visible margin, number, title and signature. The background is black. The octopus is reddish on top, then dark blue, with brown legs are spiralled up and drawn in close to its body.

Here is The Maiden of the Dawn & the Firebird for the 7th #FolktaleWeek2025 prompt dawn.

A Prince is prophesied to fly away on the Firebird on his 15th birthday & marry the Maiden of the Dawn. So the King imprisons him in a luxurious tower prison & holds an elaborate 15th birthday, without him.

In the Gaelic mythology of Ireland, Scotland & the Isle of Man, the divine old woman, or hag, created the landscape itself and the storms and weather of winter. Known by many names, she is the Cailleach (literally the old woman or hag) or 🧵
My Lino block print on 8” x 10” Japanese paper shows a blue-black frame with Celtic knot in each corner with the words “The Cailleach” at the top and “Beira Queen of Winter” at the bottom in lettering inspired by Gothic Celtic letters. Inside the frame is my illustration of the Old Hag, the Cailleach marching across the rocky, hilly landscape in a winter storm in two shades of blue. She wears a cloak and great plaid and has her staff in her right hand and her hammer in the left. She has blue skin and copper coloured teeth and grimaces in the wind indicated by swirling lines. There is snow falling and the land behind her is inspired by the Hag’s Head geologic feature named for her.

Day 3 of #FolktaleWeek25 prompt is rain. My hand-carved, hand-printed lino block print of the well-known, ancient Chinese folktale of the magpie bridge linking the lovers, The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd, separated by a great river, which is the Milky Way, is printed on lovely Japanese paper. 🧵
My black and white linocut the Chinese folktale of The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd, shows the Cowherd at the bottom right, reaching up towards the weeping Weaver Girl at the top left. Each stands on a stylized raining cloud. There are 6 magpies in flight, flying over raining waves of the river between them. As you look from the bottom left of the river up towards the top right the waves transform into the simple dots of the stars in the Milky Way.
