As you say, Pelosi et. al aren't Nazis, but they suffer from mainstream white American society's deep denial about baked-in white supremacy writ large. It's the equivalent of ignoring your friends' obviously out-of-control drug addiction, because he is your friend, until he runs you over

It's the kind of thing where, if they're actually that naive then they're criminally incompetent, but looking at even a fragment of the larger context makes it clear it's not that, and pretending otherwise is denial.

Yeah, the Republican Party became knowingly fascist in 1964 when they chose Goldwater, and proved themselves irredeemable in 68 by choosing Nixon over Rockefeller by a margin of ten to one.

I just got a call from my loan officer that because I had to spend my down payment on rent, I may no longer qualify for my mortgage loan

Similar to how political defeatism has become normalized by Democrats. An ideology they would dismiss out of context becomes The Party Line so the footsoldiers feel they have to defend it.

Not to sound like I'm defending conservatives but it's pretty clear the move towards fascism within the party has been self-reinforcing to an extent. A lot of these people wouldn't have gotten on board with fascism if there wasn't an institutional infrastructure supporting it
