If Obama or Biden or Clinton had demolished a significant part of the White House to build a privately funded edition that they commissioned and approved without public input they would have been summarily impeached.
Scoop: Trump has started demolishing the White House's East Wing facade to build his ballroom. The president had claimed construction of the $250 million building wouldn’t ‘interfere’ with the existing White House structure. /W @ddiamond.bsky.social wapo.st/4hqBNiU

There’s a limit to the “imagine if Obama” retort but Christ on a cracker the man is *literally* demolishing the White House!

Such a striking photo opportunity from an administration full of people who made a huge fuss about how pulling down some crummy Confederate statues “erased history”. But there’s no contradiction here: it’s all part of the construction of the historical narrative they prefer.

The disqualifications have become qualifications, the destroyer of worlds.
Paul Ingrassia, President Donald Trump’s embattled nominee to lead the Office of Special Counsel, told a group of fellow Republicans in a text chain the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday should be 'tossed into the seventh circle of hell' and said he has 'a Nazi streak'

the 9th cir decision overruling the TRO might be the funniest "per curiam" i've ever seen? it's an unsigned opinion written by "the court" as a three judge panel, but has a concurring opinion and a dissenting opinion attached

So everyone's concerned about the people's house and destroying history and yeah sure, all that, whatever, but also...

Security.

Who can trust that the White House is a remotely secure environment now that some shady contractor is tearing it up and rebuilding it?
I can't really explain fully why this is the thing of all things that got my jaw on the floor but I guess it's such a literal symbol and also such a jaw dropping amount of money while small businesses are struggling to survive the tariffs

Such a visible "go fuck yourself"

For example: The job market has collapsed and the Trump Admin is blocking the release of accurate employment data.

Those are facts, but there isn't any clear coverage of it in any major national media. It's simply not part of the "narrative" of our reality in 2025. You gotta figure it out yourself.

It's crazy that only took about 20 years for right wing corporate interests to buy and either coopt or outright destroy virtually every single national and local media organization that produced effective and informative political reporting.

been reading a lot of medieval English history recently and it's instructive as to why the Anglo political tradition evolved away from monarchy. every 4th king or so would turn out to be a murderous lunatic, people got sick of it
it is kind of interesting how not only do they openly yearn for monarchy, but they also want a system of monarchy more absolute than almost any of the historical reference points where the president can tax, spend, declare war, even suspend habeas corpus at will
Johnson blames the No Kings protests. Says “it is quite ironic.” Johnson says “if President Trump was a king” the government would be open.

Trump as Hitler is overstating the case, although there are genuine Nazi elements in the government. Trump as Charles I is just correct
if Trump were a king he’d be circumventing the legislature by imposing taxes without consent, and would be preventing rebellious legislators from taking their seats in the house.

Wait a minute…
Mike Johnson: "The irony was that they called it the No Kings Rally, but if President Trump was a king, the government would be open. If President Trump was a king, he would've closed the nationals parks and the National Mall so they couldn't of had the rally out here."

Speaker of the House holding a formal presser to announce that Jesus is the king of everyone in the USA should be getting more attention
Chip Roy: "The truth is the marxist, radicals, and Islamists the Democratic Party promoted this weekend, they cannot handle the truth. The truth is that there is a king and that king is Jesus. And the president has been willing to say it, & Charlie Kirk was willing to say it & he got killed for it."

You go into a store to buy a 2-litre bottle of milk at the supermarket and pay $3. But the person in front of you in line paid $3.50. And the person behind you paid $2.

Surveillance pricing is the practice of monitoring consumer data to charge you the most they think you will be willing to pay.

You can’t compromise on rights and especially on humanity. If one group says “This group can be sacrificed to save the rest of us,” it’s not a purity test to say “absolutely not.”
"purity tests" "circular firing squad" "the left eat their own" are such bullshit phrases.

people disagree on politics! that's how it works.

deal with it instead of whining about marginalized people correctly pointing out that certain "compromises" only strengthens fascism

On the plus side it has completely cured me of any sense of being impressed or intimidated by people who went to fancy schools.
The entire "free speech on campus" moral panic was manufactured to blackmail us into making space in intellectual life for bigots and charlatans who couldn't get there on their own merits. Its a DEI scheme for fascism. Congratulations to everyone who took it at face value.

Both here and in the CO apartment complexes that Stephen Miller used to fearmonger about Tren de Aragua could have been addressed by addressing the slum landlord, rather than raiding an apartment building and detaining the American citizens as well.
Reading more about this raid and it is strikingly how committed the building owner was to endangering his tenants, whether through years of neglect or signing off on state terror.

"...Trump noted that one benefit (to him) of invoking it would be to shut down the courts.

This is not just a threat to the sovereignty of states. It is, explicitly, a threat to the coequal status of the courts, up to and including SCOTUS. That may make them view this threat differently."
