Core to playing this down is pretending that "Young Republicans" aren't 40 years old with top positions in both the party and government. One's a state senator.

I do not think that will go as they think.

Folks in frog suits, people in Sunday Best, religious leaders in formal garb, and your mom/grandmother do not a clean pretext make.

And ICE brutality is pretty well established now.

"a memorandum expanding his administration’s authority"

The phrasing you're looking for is that he's suspending parts of the Constitution by decree.
nytimes.com
President Trump on Wednesday signed a memorandum expanding his administration’s authority to repurpose unspent federal funds to pay members of the military during the government shutdown, escalating his challenge to the authority of Congress on spending matters.
Trump Signs Memo Expanding His Authority to Spend Federal Money
The president gave Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth wide authority to repurpose funds to pay members of the military without approval from Congress, which has the sole constitutional authority to decide federal spending.

Before Trump's first term, the US was at the top of the list. Before his second term, we were in 7th place. Less than one year into his second term, we have fallen all the way to 12th place. Are we great again yet?

Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

First time I was ever threatened by a cop, I was 13. We were playing manhunt and I was it. Was looking under a car for my friends and the cop thought I was running from her. Threatened to tase me if I didn’t produce and ID.

The adultification of Black kids is the criminalization of Black kids, they see Black babies as full grown threats to justify coming down on them hard.

Suffice it to say, these are not kids. These are full grown ass adults, many of them in their late 20's and early 30's. At least one was a elected state senator in Vermont. And even if they were, it's never ok to make antisemitic and racist jokes like that.

This is exactly why I started researching how we introduce each successive generation to the fact that this was a slaveholding nation through picturebooks and elementary curriculum.

I was going to write a book about it (still may), but Nikole Hannah-Jones' 1619 Project did SUCH great work on this.

For real. I honestly think a lot of that is because of how the Civil Rights Movement was taught in schools. “Rosa Parks, MLK, and Malcolm X marched and made some speeches, then the Civil Rights Act was passed and racism went away” basically sums up how we were taught in the ‘80s. Heads, meet sand.

It's really weird to have been a teenager or 20-something in the 1990s and then say in middle age with your entire chest "racism was solved back then, then it was brought back."

This is a really fucking good and thorough read on such an asinine incident. I only know of Piker (I have zero interest in political/culture streamers, even progressive ones) but the fact that this became such “a thing” is troubling.

TL;DR: No amount of truth will ever stop determined liars.

What do I know and I'm not saying it's a magic bullet or anything like that but it sure seems to me that Dems should run hard on the Argentina bailout. Not anywhere near the worst thing Trump has done, but i suspect it's unusually clarifying.
