Applied ecologist working on the ecological emergency
Studying ecosystem restoration, rewilding, dispersal, spatial ecology, ecosystem services, agro-ecology, global change. Views are my own & personal/unofficial
Focusing on ecological processes offers an adaptive approach to conservation at a time of rapid environmental change
But how do we measure & conserve these processes?
This PhD will explore the use of species traits to assess ecosystem condition

Experts warn we face “unprecedented societal & ecological collapse” unless urgent action. Starvation, economic breakdown, civil unrest, war.

As the climate crisis takes hold, we are going to have to try novel approaches to conservation
And some of that will involve taking risks

So, if we lost our extant large wild mammals from the UK - badger (big for the UK), deer species, umm…
In what way do people think our ecosystems would suffer?
I would say that conservation for ecosystem functioning & processes is useful, but is not the same as a utilitarian ecosystem services approach. See our paper on the former argument
