Mamdani is not a radical. He has run a tight, smart, fairly standard local campaign. He'll probably get 20 or 30 percent of his platform if he's lucky. The one radical thing he's done is told the Times to go to hell. He has campaigned every step of the way like he doesn't need them, and he's right.

Borough president (corrupt disaster)
Public advocate (largely ineffective)
CEO of big company (pretty good mayor)
U.S. Attorney (corrupt disaster, esp. in hindsight)
Borough president (he got done dirty)
Member of Congress (three terms)

You might ask: how could intelligent people miss something so glaringly obvious? And I’m afraid the answer is that a lot people cannot ever accept that reactionaries can’t be won over with compromises, because that would mean their entire analysis of politics is totally fucked. So it can’t be true.
