I keep returning to Miyazaki’s response to “AI animation” all the way back in 2016, years before public access/primetime, declaring it “An insult to life itself” within minutes

Struck how the absolute moral clarity of that impression still resonates today, unlike this so called Generative effort.

The amount of overlooked Japanese FPS games is just staggering, been waiting patiently for this. Thanks so much @st1ka.bsky.social, can't wait to watch this later today!

I am covering EVERY First Person Shooter EVER made in Japan.

From 1985 to 2025, that's over 40 years and 70 games of gaming history.

This was without a doubt the most ambitious video I've ever made.

Alongside today’s big Shadow of the Colossus oral history, we have three bonus stories for paid subscribers. First up: Our full interview with Fumito Ueda and Kenji Kaido, talking about Wander’s character design, Warp’s influence on Team Ico, and why Ueda feels conflicted about the game’s ending.
Extended Fumito Ueda and Kenji Kaido interview
Parts of our interview with Shadow of the Colossus' director and line producer ended up on the cutting room floor, so we put together an extended cut for those who want to read the full thing.

Mamoru Oshii planned it. A young Satoshi Kon took the lead on its layouts. The result: a stunning moment from Patlabor 2.

We're looking inside the film's martial law sequence, including storyboards and production art:

Please remember that the disgust people have over Christopher Columbus is not based on some modern, 21st century “woke” ideology, but rather on contemporaneous accounts of atrocities that make many modern genocides appear quaint in comparison.

Below, are the accounts of Bartlomé de las Casas.
But too many of the slaves died in captivity. And so Columbus, desperate to pay back dividends to those who had in-vested, had to make good his promise to fill the ships with gold. In the province of Cicao on Haiti, where he and his men imagined huge gold fields to exist, they ordered all persons fourteen years or older to collect a certain quantity of gold every three months. When they brought it, they were given copper tokens to hang around their necks. Indians found without a copper token had their hands cut off and bled to death.
The Indians had been given an impossible task. The only gold around was bits of dust garnered from the streams. So they fled, were hunted down with dogs, and were killed. After each six or eight months' work in the mines, which was the time required of each crew to dig enough gold for melting, up to a third of the men died.
While the men were sent many miles away to the mines, the wives remained to work the soil, forced into the excruciating job of digging and making thousands of hills for cassava plants.
Thus husbands and wives were together only once every eight or ten months and when they met they were so exhausted and depressed on both sides... they ceased to pro-create. As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and fam-ished, had no milk to nurse them, and for this reason, while I was in Cuba, 7000 children died in three months. Some mothers even drowned their babies from sheer desper-ation.... In this way, husbands died in the mines, wives died at work, and children died from lack of milk ... and in a short time this land which was so great, so powerful and fer-tile... was depopulated... My eyes have seen these acts so foreign to human nature, and now I tremble as I write....

One of the weirdest games ever, and now with no reason not to try it.

Very funny that there were apparently english audio files on the Japanese-only disc but never used.

The user Vague Rant just shared a patch for "Toy Story 2: Buzz Lightyear to the Rescue!" on the SEGA Dreamcast to fix its awful analog controls once and for all!

I gave it a quick test on real hardware and boy oh boy, is it a massive improvement.

Just happy to see others regard it so highly, all these years out from its initial release.

That rare game which, right from the start, feels so well executed and revolutionary that you're sure a new (sub)genre has been birthed. Or how it should have gone. That the only "Valkyria-like" I know of (outside the sequels) is 2015's Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. for the 3DS is such a damning statement.

Their opinion is their opinion, whatever, but they’re re-writing history here. TRON was Disney’s highest-grossing live action film in 5 years, a decent hit that made a lot from merchandise and arcades. Home video was also very successful for TRON, and Legacy didn’t flop, it made $400 million.
mtsw.bsky.social
Pretty confused by how TRON became a big-budget movie franchise. Was it a bit hit when it came out? No. Did it become a big hit on video/TV? Also no. Do people have fond nostalgic memories of it? Eh kinda but not really. Was it secretly great and critically acclaimed? No again

Phantasy Star Online 2 is no more a replacement for the original PSO than Final Fantasy XIV is for XI.

Thinking about it, the original Deus Ex may be the king of choice in a game with a story, because your choices are significant, linked to gameplay and unforced. From the very start, for instance, whether you use or avoid lethal force against the “terrorists” determines something about you.
