It’s a shame that apps like Kodi/VLC can’t just tap into the Xbox’s existing Blu-ray capabilities and just borrow them to run ISO’s.

That’s probably what it is, because Discotek stuff plays back with menus with no issue while Disney stuff works best if you just playback the main title.

I think the most inconvenient thing is having to occasionally restart the Xbox, not put it to sleep, but a full restart, to get HDR back if it screws up. I hope Kodi addresses it soon.

Kodi on Xbox does support ISO rips of DVD’s excellently, but Blu-ray and 4K UHD Blu-ray is a little hit and miss if you want to use menus. VLC on Xbox doesn’t support ISO’s with menus. I would just replace this whole thing with an HTPC if I could but I’m out of HDMI ports so Kodi get better please.

NEW: There’s a disaster unfolding in Alaska right now. And no major network is covering it.

The remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska overnight. Homes, with people in them, have literally been swept into the Bering Strait.

At least 20 are missing. No comment from any federal agency.

That said, I know that people have already cracked the Xbox and 360's copy protection and built emulators to run those games. Maybe Microsoft has enough money to say, "Screw it" and pay any 3rd party that complains about it.

I think Sony gets away with it since the drive and connectors are so locked down to Sony's closed OS, but I don't think Xbox could do that on Windows.

I hope you're right, but I personally can't see it. I think if Xbox is going to merge into Windows and basically go full PC, I can't see them making a attachable disc drive that could be potentially exploited easily to pirate old games.

That blows since I love using my Series X as CD/DVD/Blu-ray/4K UHD Blu-ray/Kodi machine and backwards compatibility with my physical 360 games. Back-compat is the whole reason I bought a Xbox Series X.

Side note: With the recent stories of Xbox having basically no physical presence in stores now, I can't see them having an option for a disc drive on their next first-party hardware. Sony still seems to at least be committed to an optional attachment but they'll likely be the last to support discs.

If they were to bring out PS6 in 2027, I would just expect an even longer cross-gen period than usual because developers can't seem to keep up and consumers don't have as much disposable income. I mean, just this month, there's 45 games coming to PS4, according to IGN. That console is 12 years old!

I can see that for Xbox since they seem to be leaving the typical subsidized console-type hardware and leaning harder than ever into non-subsidized PC hardware like we've seen with the Xbox ROG Ally, but Sony? I just can't see it. I think they could stretch out into 2028 if they really wanted to.
