I also had a strange, over enunciated mid Atlantic one after a Downton Abbey binge. My mom is also a mimic and she was exasperated with it. The hardest for me was Sarah Palin. My brain found her accent fascinating and wanted to try it, and I had to work to stop it. Made me speak beautifully clearly.

Yay! And god do I know how hard that is. I’m less likely to pick up British accents for some reason I don’t understand. My dad has an Oxbridge one, and I probably had one until I left the UK when I was 2. But I didn’t auto mimic them until I was in my late 20s. I sounded like Madonna when she did it

Winter babbys. Photo from my collection, no date/info.
Black and white photo of a white man in winter clothing, sitting outside in a snowy park or boardwalk or something. Under each arm he’s holding a beautiful white medium haired cat.

The mechanism through which Trump is paying the troops is the most blatant large Antideficiency Act (ADA) violation in US history. It's also clearly willful. No one has been charged under the ADA before, but violations carry a two-year jail term. The statute of limitations is five years.

EXCLUSIVE: Capitol Police are investigating a swastika found in GOP Rep. Dave Taylor’s office.

“The content of that image does not reflect the values or standards of this office, my staff, or myself, and I condemn it in the strongest terms," Taylor said in a statement.

My parents are directTV subscribers. They don’t want crap like this. What they want is for directTV to stop fighting with Nexstar and to be able to watch our local NBC station, that they’re still charged for, again. It’s been years now.
arstechnica.com
With legacy pay TV providers already dealing with dwindling subscriptions, the introduction of new types of ads risks making DirecTV less appealing as well—and it’s likely that things won’t end there.

Like other companies with streaming businesses, DirecTV is leaning into ads more.

In Mar 2020 I wrote ep 3 of Leverage: Redemption, in which Brianna mentions growing up w/ "the return of actual Nazis". It aired in July 2021, AFTER a Capitol rioter wore a "Camp Auschwitz" shirt, & reviewers on IMDb quoted the Nazi line & complained Leverage had gone woke.

And here we fucking are.

Sorry I’m gonna go back on my bullshit here: National Consersvatism’s entire ethos boils down to “this problem, that we created, exacerbated, and oppose any effort to combat, is very bad. We will solve it by making it worse”

I suspect populist parties bootstrapped their own political support by weaponizing the residual, ambient distrust present in all societies & MAKING MORE OF IT, spreading & intensifying it, by propagating narratives of distrust & corruption. By repetition & uptake by other political actors, it rose.

My parents watch BBC World News and PBS and local and national ABC and CBS news. They read the New York Times and the local newspaper. Mom likes Colbert’s monologue so she gets some coverage from that, but he pitches the jokes to people who are online some, so many go over her head.
amockingbird.bsky.social
I really wish these reports were getting into the mainstream media our parents read and watch, because it’s really hard trying to explain to my mom why I don’t give a fuck about what a retired Supreme Court justice says about the lack of civility in discourse.

Hakeem Jeffries posted pictures of two Rep. Members posing with “Young Republicans” who were part of a racist text thread (as reported by Politico).

In response, Mike Davis (well-connected in Trump World & on the Hill) called Jeffries a “house slave” for George Soros - proving Jeffries’ point.

New! Soft, pillowy cheese dumplings fried in browned butter and sage -- basically ravioli without the pasta wrapper -- are the perfect fall food, a little decadent yet somehow just as cozy as a scarf on a blustery day.

Our premiums are likely to double or even triple because of Republican cuts to the ACA.

Mamdani: "I just want to speak directly to the president. I will not be a mayor like Mayor Adams who will call you to stay out of jail. I won't be a disgraced governor like Andrew Cuomo who will call you to ask how to win this election. I can do those things on my own."

Also of note, to get past the headline’s passive voice:

The swastika-flag was pinned onto a workspace just like every other piece on the wall/cubicle there. Noticed in the background of a zoom call. Not called in by the office.

C’mon, it’s the staffer’s *decoration*, not a prank or sabotage.

I can't stress enough how young staffers working for Republicans are basically all groyper Nazis now. The leaked texts yesterday saying "I love Hitler" and now swastikas on congressional offices.

Trump and Vought are now breaking both sides of spending law. They’re illegally not spending where the law requires them to spend, and they’re illegally spending where they don’t have the money to spend.

What we have is an appropriations king.

Spending “deals” are meaningless under that setup.
