For peak December coziness, I merged two of my favorite things: onion soup and braised short ribs, into a decadent, rich stew-like soup that's as welcome at a casual drop-in as a big holiday dinner. Or, make it to just spoil yourself - you deserve it.

The last banana bread recipe we will ever need has a towering height and a crunchy top that will be hard not to lift off in one giant tile and swiftly coat the underside with salted butter. The inside is plush and perfectly-crumbed, but never squidgy.

A cookie that apologizes in advance to the other cookies in your tin; they’re terrible at sharing the spotlight. These checkerboard cookies are as fuss-free (cold butter, clean counters) and delicious as I could possibly make them.

An "unholy, resistance-melting aroma of melted, bubbling cheese" emanating from a lightweight custard that's burnished and nearly crisp on top -- oh, and there's cauliflower and caramelized onions burrowed in there too.

Everything dreamy about cinnamon buns in a full pan of salted butter and brown cinnamon sugar ribbons and twists. As they fan open in the oven, the filling lightly caramelizes and crisps. Cream cheese icing on the side, because these are too pretty to cover.

A three-ingredient, perfectly cozy, gorgeously-hued cocktail that's become my absolute favorite. It's a cousin to the Negroni, but it uses bourbon or rye instead of gin. The result is more mellow and 100% perfect for right now.

This week, the Yap is back and it's to the brim with diversions: a great restaurant, off-broadway show, two movies, two earworms, a viral recipe, and inspiring bake-off at the Metropolitan Opera. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoy writing it.

The secret to making unsticky perfectly-spiced nut mixes that pack up perfectly for gifts with a long shelf life? An egg white. These are a 15 year-plus favorite for gifts and treats.

These french onion baked lentils are farro are a dream of a winter dish, perfect for a dinner party. It's loose like risotto, hearty enough to be utterly filling, and tastes precisely like french onion soup, blistered broiled gruyere on top and all.

The easiest, fastest, and tastiest sparkly sugar cookies. A few cool techniques do away with the usual peskiness: We start with cold butter, chill the dough quickly, don't even flour our counters. And these use no cookie cutters or piping bags either!

Great steak fry-like wedges of sweet potatoes roasted with honey, lime and chile flakes, topped with crispy chickpeas and yogurt to make an easy but complex meal you probably won't even want to share. (We won't tell if you don't.)

A casserole, but not the boring kind. Here, I switched out pasta for a whole grain and ended up with a cozy, wildly flavorful, cheesy, crunchy-topped dinner that we make again and again.

Potato leek soup, my way: The kind of hearty, cozy soup needed on a rainy day plus a few strong opinions on sour cream, chives, and lemon (they're essential) and the crispy topping nobody can resist.

For some instant joy right now, may I recommend a really easy sprinkle cookie recipe that tastes even better than it looks? They're plush, complex, fragrant, and also, you know, really cute decked out in holiday sprinkles. You're going to love them.

A sky-high vegetable lasagna, five layers of noodles, sauce, cheese, and vegetables (that are not an afterthought, for once). The top layer is crackly with melted, deeply bronzed cheese over garlicky tomato sauce and might be the very best reason to make this.

Easy-peasy cornbread waffles that can go sweet (sautéed bananas, maple syrup), savory (cheddar, salsa, avocado) or a little of both (fried chicken, hot honey, please). I think we should. [Thank you @joythebaker!]

I rarely saw straight-up cranberry pies so I made my own. I found that the secret to a great one was an even better contrast. This is topped with a thick crumble of oats, toasted pecans, cinnamon, brown sugar and butter and it's heavenly against the tart berries.

The spinach is buttery with a layer of crispy crumbs and cheese on top but manages to stay unheavy. It keeps and reheats fantastically, not that there are ever leftovers. The updated recipe includes instructions for using frozen spinach so it's easier than ever.
