Grateful! For the good parts of an imperfect memory. For practical time-lapse effects. For bright enough stars.
Black background with a rather faint design of blue-toned grid lines and random dots giving computer/sci-fi vibes. Bright aqua text duplicates the content of the post (except I've misspelled "time-lapse" in it--left out the hyphen--but I am too tired to fix it), then says: #grateful, Amber Bird, amberbird.com

Jewish law & Bible scholarship don't think the word in the 10 Commandments for "steal" is about, like, shoplifting.

Look at eg Genesis 40:15, Exodus 21:16 , Deuteronomy 24:7--

the commandment is not to steal people. Don't kidnap.

Though you shouldn't need the Bible to teach you that. #AbolishICE

He stopped at my door and looked me in the eye, and I’ll never, ever forget this. I repeated it recently. He said, “Jim, our job is to protect empathy at all costs, and to live groovy lives.”

oh no. i forgot that the active child song from that gutting scene in the magicians is in this slightly sad scene in old guard. came out to have good time...honestly feeling so attacked...etc
amberbird.bsky.social
anyway, motivations matter and fights can be like dance, can be engaging storytelling, can be thrilling. so please stop ruining all that "can be" for me. i'd threaten to hit you, but that seems potentially antithetical to my point 😂
amberbird.bsky.social
i want to note that i haven't lost interest in all fight scenes. or even in all media that is heavy on fights. but so much of it just feels like the reasons there are fights (both the in-media reasons and the real-world writer/director ones) are...not strong or compelling.
amberbird.bsky.social
re-watching old guard (so i can watch #2). that first fight scene has me thinking about what still interests me in fight scenes. (i feel like media is oversaturated with them these days to the point where mostly i now use them for wee breaks. soz. and i hate that cos i have LOVED a good fight scene)

I am in pain about 80% of the time (the type & severity vary but it's very common), and the vast majority of people never even know. And my pain rating of 6 is someone else's 10. This is meaningless bullshit that will primarily be used to deny people pain relief and care.

Facial expressions common to all humans! 🙃
PainChek is one of these behavioral models, and it acts like a camera‑based thermometer, but for pain: A care worker opens the app and holds a phone 30 centimeters from a person’s face. For three seconds, a neural network looks for nine particular microscopic movements—upper‑lip raise, brow pinch, cheek tension, and so on—that research has linked most strongly to pain. Then the screen flashes a score of 0 to 42. “There’s a catalogue of ‘action‑unit codes’—facial expressions common to all humans. Nine of those are associated with pain,” explains Kreshnik Hoti, a senior research scientist with PainChek and a co-inventor of the device. This system is built directly on the foundation of FACS. After the scan, the app walks the user through a yes‑or‑no checklist of other signs, like groaning, “guarding,” and sleep disruption, and stores the result on a cloud dashboard that can show trends.

and related to prev repost...this little thread
as an autistic person who knows many autistic people? yeah.
(and, for me, it's disrespectful if you ignore my preference. calling me a "person with autism" after i tell you i'm an autistic person makes me not trust you or want to interact with you.)
theradr.bsky.social
side rant: when are newsrooms going to get over parents' ablest squick about their kids and start using identity first language?

"disabled person" not "person who is great!! except for this icky disability!!"

"autistic person" not "person with a lil' case of the autisms"

etc

it's hell for anyone, but for an autistic person? i can't know his autistic traits, but i know mine (and those of assorted others) and i just...i'm gonna go scream in enraged feral autistic now

Los Angeles County voted to declare a state of emergency in response to federal ICE raids. Normally reserved for natural disasters, the declaration allows the county to mobilize resources and offer assistance to residents impacted by the raids.

this!

i have been saddened by some unexpected reactions and thoughtlessness from folks i thought would have more care for me.
i mostly have a mindset that lets me weather this ok so far, but that's me and that's now. and even i would love to do less weathering, as it were.

Also, re. masking: Even if you don't normally mask, if you have friends/acquaintances who do and you're willing to go places with them, eat outdoors, use air filters, mask when you hang out, etc., please TELL THEM. A lot of us are afraid to ask for fear of ending a friendship (or never starting one)

I'm not trying to be a dick.

But they picked two fat republicans for a bunch of jokes when the young republicans said the worst shit imaginable.

My fat ass is out there fighting for what's right.

Stop equating fat with bad or less. Stop telling ME I'm one annoyance away from being your target.

if you have a favorite co-working/writing Twitch streamer who
- does work sessions of 45+ minutes (longer better)
- spends more time working than chatting
- is on around this time of day
please let me know!

(there's *nothing* wrong with chattiness, but I struggle with it when trying to work)

and if certain blokes take that as me staring at them in a way that says i told them so? well. at least the message will have been delivered without me having to make actual eye contact with them

my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

good thread on pairing absurdity (which is a useful tactic!) with action (which is necessary to make the absurdity actually Something)
taliajane.bsky.social
as charming and whimsical as some will view this, it bears noting that absurdity—not militancy or might—are what people have chosen to repeat from the portland standoffs against ICE.

why is that?

what purpose does this serve?
