To understand this problem, first, you have to understand the demographics of Star Trek viewers. Trekkies are and always have been men. Women are not usually interested in science fiction, but that’s doubly true of Star Trek in particular.

I asked my sister for a recipe from my great grandmother’s book and old Sylvia had notoriously small, narrow old-time cursive handwriting. My sister did her best to interpret it and I love that it reads like a Silent Hill puzzle

New(?) rind halves of 4 large oranges
Slice rind halves and put in heavy pot - cover with water- bring to boil, cook at boiling for twenty minutes- throw out water - rinse orange slices with cold water - and repeat above process two more times (3 times in all).

Make syrup of 1 1/4 cups water - 1 1/4 cup sugar (granulated) and add 9 whole cloves - bring to a boil nd stir - then add orange rind slices and bring to a boil then simmer (slow boil) until liquid almost gone. Watch so as not to burn and shake(?) just(?) as syrups cooks. Until slices (three words I can't figure out). (Word?) and slices skins side up on cookie racks to dry.
