Useful thread on the Gaza ceasefire from Elizabeth Saunders, building on a piece from Page Fortna.
profsaunders.bsky.social
🧵A thread inspired by this new @goodauth.bsky.social piece from the Dean of Ceasefire Studies, @pagefortna.bsky.social. Also, I like to admit when I'm wrong. I was wrong to doubt there would be a ceasefire, and I have written that Trump destroyed US diplomacy. 1/

The Israel-Hamas ceasefire leaves important questions unanswered
Many important details must still be worked out.

“it’s not fair, the dodgers spent too much money”

there is no such thing as too much money. that’s the whole damn idea if you’re rich as sin and have enough money to BUY A BASEBALL TEAM. you spend and spend and if that doesn’t work you spend some more
stuartshapiroblou.bsky.social
Of course back then, the team with the better record played the first two games on the road.

Yes, I suspect we will see this Dodgers team as the best one since that dynasty.

Netanyahu refuses to release Marwan Barghouti, the most popular Palestinian leader—and the one most likely to bring about a two-state solution. Hamas refuses to disarm. The two enemies are united in opposition to a two-state solution. That makes lasting peace unlikely. wapo.st/3W5yhAx
Opinion | Why the Gaza ceasefire won’t lead to lasting peace
“A new Middle East” will require sacrifices that Israelis and Palestinians show no sign of making.

Indeed so. The only major effort was to repair the Electoral Count Act. Important - but reforms to the National Emergencies Act, the Civil Service Reform Act (to bar Schedule F), the Insurrection Act, etc., should not have been out of reach.

Congressional Dems and the Biden admin should have put more effort into passing post-Trump reforms. We need more aggressive reform than what was on offer then, but it could really have helped

one thing that has been obvious for a while is this aspect of the authoritarian internationale: they recognize that their allies abroad are not *countries* but *political movements* within foreign countries.

time we liberals woke up and recognized this--because it's the truth.

Or maybe, just maybe, what was obvious in 2024 was correct: Netanyahu fully backed Trump and would not deal with Biden because Trump would give him a free hand to escalate the starvation, bombing, and do full ethnic cleansing. Which he then did, until Netanyahu embarrassed him by bombing Qatar.

One lesson for pro-democracy advocates currently sitting in opposition around the world -- hammer incumbents on corruption and link strengthening liberal democracy (aka accountability) to anti-corruption efforts.

I generally describe the job as "managing in" - dealing with events and challenges at the school, "managing out" talking to donors and maybe reporters, and "managing up" going to meetings and fulfilling university functions. Circumstances dictate which dominates in any given day/week.

New, from me:
Trump's 3 step plan to create a military omniforce
1. Purge - those deemed disloyal
2. Merge - different parts of law enforcement/military
3. Surge - impose the omniforce on Dem cities; instigate unrest; assert dominance; silence dissent

Purge, Merge, and Surge
Trump is creating a omniforce of armed loyalists to establish his police state

Russell Vought embodies the radicalization of the conservative movement; his example captures how far removed from democratic politics the Trumpist Right is. Vought is convinced to be fighting a noble war against a vast leftist conspiracy that has supposedly taken over the country.

Ultimately, I think this is the right question. The government is losing credibility as an employer. The private sector cannot absorb all federal jobs but those with the greatest expertise and experience will have less difficulty finding jobs--especially in fields like health care.

I’ve started watching the film “I’m Still Here” and its depiction of the Brazilian military dictatorship shows how much bleaker it might still get. We can’t wait another 16 months.
