I know it's probably a long-shot to get anything definitive from just a few pics but thought I'd get others opinions. I recently watched a really interesting BSBI verbascum video on YouTube which rekindled my desire to ID this one.

#Wildflower #Verbascum #BlueSkyMonday Today I chose a Common Mullein silhouetted against a brilliant blue sky. Taken in January 2021, it made me think of a Saguaro cactus.
In front of a brilliant blue sky, the multiple branches of a Common Mullein's spent flower stalks, reach upwards. At the bottom, in snow, are clumps of weeds. All the vegetation is a very dark brown colour, almost black.

Common mullein (Scrophulariaceae: Verbascum thapsus) occurs throughout North America as a biennial invasive weed introduced from Eurasia. The first year plants look like fuzzy cabbages, and in the second year they grow into larger plants with tall yellow inflorescences. Brady Nebraska, 29 Jul 2025.

First #sixonSaturday for 2026 and my tiny garden is still looking very wintery so I thought I would highlight some of my resilient, “free” (ie self seeded) plants. It’s just foliage for now but later there will be flowers. Names in Alt text. 🌱
A collage of six self seeded plants in my tiny garden. The first is Verbascum with grey, felty leaves. Later it will produce a tall stem of yellow flowers. The next one is Honesty or Lunaria. It has slightly variegated leaves and will produce white flowers. I bought a single plant some yers ago and now have plenty! The next one is Arum or “Lords and Ladies”. It can be a bit of a thug but has very attractive mottled leaves. Herb Robert or an annual Geranium produces tiny mauve flowers and seeds everywhere but is easy to pull up. Linaria or Toadflax will produce spikes of purple flowers. The last one is Smyrmium or Alexanders which will produce white flowers in the summer. Apparently it is edible but I haven’t tried it.

A taxonomic revision of the genus Mullein (𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘮) on the Arabian Peninsula recognizes 17 species. 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘮 𝘴𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘮 is newly described, and 𝘝𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘶𝘮 𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘶𝘮 is newly confirmed for the peninsula’s flora.

A black & white bird on a columnar seed head. The bird has a small red patch at the back of it's head, black wings with white spots, a black eye band, white down the center of it's back as well as white breast feathers.

Étymologiquement, le latin 𝑉𝑒𝑟𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑐𝑢𝑚 dérive de 𝑏𝑎𝑟𝑏𝑎𝑠𝑐𝑢𝑚 à priori lié à l'apparence "barbue" de la plante
Le mot molène vient du latin "𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑙𝑖𝑠" (doux) qui évoque la texture des feuille
Enfin l'ancien nom grec “𝑝ℎ𝑙𝑜𝑚𝑜𝑠” (φλóμoς) la rapproche de “𝑝ℎ𝑙𝑜𝑥” (φλóξ,“flamme”)

Day 14 of my botanical #adventcalendar is this showy number from Stirling Castle Mound - White Mullein. This was recorded in Stirling in 1883, then not seen until 2024 - a gap of 141 years!

This nationally scarce plant has seeds that can remain viable for many years, but even so... #wildflowerhour
White Mullein (Verbascum lychnitis) plants growing on Ladies Rock in the Church of the Holy Rude cemetery on Stirling Castle Mound. The inflorescences are much branched and laden with broad, five-petalled white flowers, with yellow and red anthers and stigmas in the centre of each flower. The flowers form racemes along each side branch and the terminal spike. Below, bluntly triangular green leaves with a pale mid-rib run down the stem to a basal rosette. In the photo there are two flowering plants in the foreground, with another behind, several plants in bud, and multiple basal rosettes. They are growing around exposed basalt rocks next to a footpath up to the Ladies Rock viewpoint, which overlooks the Forth Valley. weedid.missouri.edu/weedinfo.cfm... growing near pavement at the lake park. The flowers on spikes in summer are pretty, attract pollinators, but it's an invasive weed taking over the countryside. Thanks, Puritans. Fun fact: once used for diapers.

There is something triffid-like and sinister about Mullein rosettes in winter. I often forget that I have Poland & Clement 2020 The Vegetative Key to the British Flora. But it's jolly useful in winter. This keys out as Verbascum thapsus, Great Mullein, probably! @bsbibotany.bsky.social
