Arctic sweet coltsfoot (Asteraceae: Petasites frigidus) is a hardy herbaceous perennial that's native to northern Asia, Europe, and North America. It prefers moist soil and shade and can often be found near streams and wet forests throughout its range. Olympic National Park, Washington, 17 Apr 2015.

Common motherwort (Lamiaceae: Leonurus cardiaca) was historically cultivated as an herbal remedy. Although it's native to central Asia it's been introduced throughout the world. Since it spreads rapidly and outcompetes native plants, it's often considered invasive. Blissfield Michigan, 22 Jun 2025.

Meadowhawks (Odonata: Libellulidae: Sympetrum spp.) are small skimmer dragonflies found mostly in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. Eastern hognose snakes (Squamata: Colubridae: Heterodon platirhinos) can be found in much of the eastern US into Canada. They inhabit forest margins, fields, and dunes with loose soil for digging nests. They feed primarily on amphibians, especially toads. Manistee River Trail, Michigan, 02 Jun 2019.

Common sage (Lamiaceae: Salvia officinalis) is a woody perennial subshrub native to the Mediterranean. It has been cultivated for millennia for medicinal uses, and more recently for culinary uses. It's right up there with basil as my favorite fresh herbs. Blissfield Michigan, 23 Jun 2025.

Walnut husk flies (Diptera: Tephritidae: Rhagoletis suavis) inhabit eastern North America. Females lay eggs in the fleshy outer husks of walnut fruit (Juglandaceae: Juglans spp.). The eggs hatch and the larvae eat the husk, but leave the walnut itself unharmed. Blissfield Michigan, 22 Aug 2010.

A Mourning Dove hen and squab (Columbiformes: Columbidae: Zenaida macroura) nesting in a barn. These common birds inhabit much of North America. They typically nest in trees or on the ground, but don't mind humans and aren't afraid to use buildings. Clayton Michigan, 21 Jun 2013.

Toyon (Rosaceae: Heteromeles arbutifolia) is an evergreen shrub native to California and Baja California. It's a pioneer species that grows quickly after fire and other disturbances, and the fruit is popular with wildlife. Channel Islands National Park, California, 26 Oct 2013.

Golden-backed snipe flies (Diptera: Rhagionidae: Chrysopilus thoracicus) are typically encountered resting on low foliage in deciduous woodlands of eastern North America. Black Skimmers (Charadriiformes: Laridae: Rynchops niger) inhabit coastal areas of southern North America as well as coasts and inland rivers throughout much of South America. They fly over the water and skim small prey items from the surface. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Texas, 17 Jun 2017.

A section of petrified wood from the late Triassic, about 225 million years ago. This fallen tree was buried in wet mud and volcanic ash. Mayflies (Ephemeroptera) are found throughout the world, typically near fresh water. Their young naiads are aquatic, and every spring they emerge as flying adults in short-lived but dense mating swarms. They're also an important food source for fish. Metzger Marsh near Bono, Ohio, 28 Jun 2014.

Hawthorns (Rosaceae: Crataegus spp.) are a valuable source of pollen and nectar for insects in the spring. Numerous butterfly and moth larvae feed on the foliage, and the small fruit provide food for wildlife in the winter. Blissfield Michigan, 11 May 2011 and 19 Oct 2009.
