As pleasing as it is to see the David Goodbourn lecture focus on Palestine, I have to wonder why they haven't chosen to center a Palestinian speaker? There are so many incredible Palestinian theologians who could have given this lecture?

More to this, I think that if you are accepting of the "God created" (& I don't know how theologians deal with this,) there has to be an acceptance of, on a certain level, that if he created, then he also very much created not only all the good, but also The Tree & what would become The Serpent ...

For real, when I attended a conservative Presbyterian seminary (Westminster Theological Seminary) in my previous life, all three of these paradigms framed pretty much all discussion about enslaving, which we (again) treated like it was most basically a "discussion" for theologians to debate. 🤮 9/10

The interior of St Roberts Cave, with rough hewn greening limestone walls and a mud floor Nobody lives here, few people visit, fewer pray, but this site is still holy. The moths clinging to the roof of the cave, don't know it's abandoned, the spiders pray their own prayers in their scuttling tongue. God cannot abandon a place, as much as we cannot abandon ourselves. What is created cannot be uncreated. What is carved from the cliff cannot be put back. This cave became a hermitage, the hermitage became a chapel, the chapel becamea shrine, the shrine became a ruin, the ruin became a crimescene, the crimescene became a tourist attraction, the tourist attraction became forgotten, and still the cave opens onto the river, the trees turn green and gold and drop their leaves, and the leaves become mud and layer onto the stone, and fill in the open grave, and carpet the cave floor, and feed the trees, that continue the cycle they began long before Robert arrived. There is something here, in this cave, that opens outwards. A span wider than the cave walls and the space between the water and the cliff. We walk here in the footsteps of the past and the future, witnessing the promise of all we could be. Medieval Theologians spoke of the possibility that it was in the nothingness that we could discover the infinite, that it was our preoccupation with all that there is, that got in the way of all we could be. Robert shed the world like a cloak, and created, in this sliver of land, something else. Every time I come I try to step closer to that something. To the truths that he found here in this fragment of space. I sit in the dark of the cave and hope that I see it, that I glimpse the wonder he saw, placed just an inch out of reach. Jay kneels before st Roberts gave, scattered around him are the low walls the the ruined chapel, and behind him the mouth of the cave opens up in the ivy-covered cliff

I want to end my yearly sermon with a prayer from the Feri tradition. I am not Feri, but its practitioners, theologians, poets, and dreamers have inspired me for many years. Maybe you aren't a theist of any sort and this doesn't ring true for you; that's okay, and I'm glad you're here reading this.

These are not people who come from a place of belief in Trump, but diplomats and academics desperately trying to make sense of what is, in a functional sense, divine self-contradiction.
Good thing we still keep some theologians around for just this kind of eventuality.

The traditionalist interpretations certainly ignore the actual context and the Greek (which scholars and theologians cannot claim ignorance of), but evangelicals took it to a whole new level.

Not surprising, since they strip anything inconvenient from the text and pretend they’re Israel.

Theologians not really thinking about the moral implications of the theology they just made up to impress their bosses is one of the subjects that makes me feel like the human experience is one long struggle against mostly incompetent bosses, tbh

Hence the idea that I refer to, in a derogatory sense, as “ghost heaven”: a magical place in the spiritual realm where all the good people go after they die.

By denying the resurrection, theologians sequestered divinity into the realm of the immaterial – where it has stayed since.

Others, such as myself and liberation theologians and specifically eco theologians understand dominion to mean bearing the ultimate responsibility for its’ wellbeing for everyone. It’s a huge responsibility, not a use that was granted to a few.

These are lord-over people.

two visions
vision 1 the story is beyond me and doesn't rely on my interpretation. but it's within me, too. and i think part of the reason i'm so rabidly opposed to anything like a dualist interpretation of the world is bc myself and everything i see around me is so split in two. and i need to believe there's more fuck "this and that". fuck "above and below". fuck every one of your binaries, dichotomies, opposites. i'm going to unify all of the opposites and i'm going to be right, bc the world is all at once too simple and too complicated for such dull, obvious analysis the whole point of Jesus is that heaven and earth are united now. the separation between I and thou, between the individual and the community, between humanity and divinity, between creature and creator, between life and death is overcome. the Kingdom is breaking in and your body is the door the unspeakable, terrifying, all-consuming flame of holiness is tearing through your soul. it's literally the end of the world and how do we respond? by singing tepid little hymns and reading from tame, #Inclusive little liturgies? prostrate, mortal, and stare into the sun until it engulfs you whole God is not "everything will be okay", God is "everything will be made right". God is not a warm hug of comfort, God is a burning fire of holy consolation. God is not a polite abstraction for theologians and seekers to reflect on and hold their ideas with a loose hand, God is a fist coming out of the void that grasps you and squeezes you in its palm, and the hand is made of eyes. and when it takes you, you'll see yourself through those eyes, and you'll despair. maybe then you can start to learn what joy is. vision 2 becoming is in order to become unbecomingness sight is for darkness, hearing is for silence, thinking for unthinking. clarity is only possible when immersed within the cloud, the only knowledge is perfect ignorance, the network contains the node and the node contains the network and neither knows the other God and all his angels and all their works in this world and beyond the world are a figment of your imagination, but that's okay, because you're only a figment of theirs. you cannot know them without knowing yourself, or yourself without knowing them, or either until both you and they cease to exist first I am seen, then I see, then I see as I am seen, then I am seen with the eye by which I see, then I neither see nor am seen, then seeing ceases and never was at all

Theologians disagree. They come at it from three angles:

(1) God explains everything, so there IS a theological explanation to everything (this leaves out sin OR sin is God’s fault… fun!)

(2) Divine wisdom wills or permits everything in the world, and so theology (God) explains everything.
