If I ever get a time machine, the David Bowie/Trent Reznor show at Polaris Amphitheater is pretty high on my list.

After a rather spotty season of concerts, wouldn’t you know Polaris's very last show for '95 was not only its very best, but one of the greatest shows this old boy has ever seen? Pairing David Bowle and Nine Inch Nails, depending on the limits of your imagination, was either puzzling or per-fect. For me, it was the latter. Trent Reznor and his Nails performed for about 45 minutes, then were joined by Bowie for four or five songs, and then it was Bowie for the rest of the night. And for once, the Polaris Amphitheater hosted musicians who commanded every inch of the pavilion and grounds with deep pres-ence, clear sound and a sense of vision in their art. Reznor was Reznor: throwing his body around like a rag doll, screaming slogans of anger, defiance and self-loathing, followed, occa-sionally, by quiet moments of self-doubt. Mostly, he raged like an infant with toxic diaper rash. His was a fantastic performance. Everything was in place: Trent Reznor at Polaris Nine Inch was so much easier to experience at Polaris than at Battelle Hall at the Ohio Center because there was no riot going on. Polaris's much-maligned tight security kept a lid on things, so there was no distrac-tion. And that was a very good thing, because Renor's music is brilliant on several levels, and you could appreciate it thanks to the law'n' order and the superb sound mix. His sampled dance beats, mixed with real drummers, smacked soundwaves into the air like a Bosnian artillery bombardment. His keyboardists and guitarist layered chord progressions and passages that were all muscle and bone, with no fat whatsoever. And cutting right down the middle of all this were Renor's raucous vocals, every word of which could be heard and understood. Every element needed to make a show work—technical, professional, musical, emotional-were in place and working together Oct. 4. Wow. And then David Bowie's appearance with Renor threw the whole thing into another universe. What a pair-not exactly the George Jones and Tammy Wynette of modern rock, are they? But seeing the two together not only felt his-toric, it created new possibilities that lasted longer than the few songs they shared. They joined for a thrilling Scary Mon-sters, followed by Reptile, Spaceboy and Hurt, but they offered more in the way of contrasts. Bowie displayed a cooler temperature of humanity, subtle and seem ingly detached but not without smiles. His movements were fewer but utterly economical and full of meaning, thanks to his days as a mime. His own set was almost entirely an exploration of uncharted territory. What familiar material he did indulge in, mostly from his darker period in the '70s, was radically rearranged, almost to the point of unrecognizability. His preoccupation with the unfamiliar was deeply satisfy-ing-a total treat.

Thank goodness for the OSU library stacks. Letterman fans Channel 10 is joining the rest of civilization and moving Dave to 11:35. Tom Snyder isn't faring as well. His show will air at 3:10 a.m. After Tempestt Bledsoe. Master Musicians of Jajouka Bill Clinton bumps the legendary Moroccan group from Mershon Auditorium to Weigel Hall. And he probably won't even bring his sax. MTV in the Big D Let's see, what else do we like about the Dispatch? Here's something: the new TV listings. The Big D has dragged its Sunday Teleview listings into the '90s—or at least the late '80s—with the addition of several cable channels, including MTV, E! and even Columbus's own ACTV. And it finally yanked New York superstation WWOR, which isn't carried by Warner or Coaxial. Now we won't find ourselves thumbing through the guide and saying, "Cool! Leave It to Beaver is " only to find it's on a channel we don't get. Those on the Media Morsels staff who have cable (one of us still monkeys around with rabbit ears) appreciate the changes.
