9) I really respect that Stoker tried to make DRACULA a contemporary document, complete with transcripts of phonograph records, telegrams, and blood transfusions.

1908 ad for telegrams. Early "globe-girdling" cyclists used telegraph poles for guidance in far-flung locations where no roads existed.

The precedent is Joshua Norton, who declared himself Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico in 1859. He sent telegrams to Lincoln and Queen Victoria telling them how to do their jobs and printed his own money, which merchants accepted to humor him.

In 1871, Robert Beare became a janitor at Victoria College. Due to his good nature and easy-going personality, he was loved by student and staff. In November 1872, students came together for a concert where Robert played the violin and served snow apples to attendees.

Nixon and Watergate were brought down by calls letters and telegrams‼️( from Washington Post articles by Woodward and Bernstein.
Senate Democrats absolutely have to shut the govt down to stop this ICE insanity in the Twin Cities. This is not sustainable & cannot be normalized. Any Democratic vote to provide money to the thugs who are brutalizing this community is a grave betrayal to the people here. Accountability can't wait.

And (out of a piece called “Telegrams”) Sobin’s refreshing humility and unpretentiousness in an unseemly and clamorous age: “Kinship of the poet and the peasant: both, intermediaries in capricious fruit.”

Alright, I won't be able to reply to all the lovely Bsky comments without clogging up everyone's timelines, but think I've caught up with most of the DMs and Telegrams and Discords all that.

Thanks so much for all the lovely birthday wishes!

Denmark has stopped standard letter delivery
Age of letters over in the land of LEGO vikings
The pen is laid down with the sword
No more writing hand, or fighting hand
It's all typing
Letter gone the way of telegrams
Its grave an envelope
A stamp its headstone

The example I like to use is the old environmental phrase "think globally, act locally" was coined in the 70s, when the extent of "think globally" was "some international newswires, maybe radio, an encyclopedia, and telegrams".

And now we've given the world a way to "think globally" that is uhh WIP
Older folks now can speak to it, but people under, like, 30 or so (and everyone into the future) is gonna have to have it reiterated to them that many times in the past, a person or community might have a question or wonder something, with very little in the way of looking it up or confirming it.

The concept of remote video calls has been worked on since Bell’s phone company pitched upgrading from telegrams to real-time voice calls. It wasn’t until the era of digital video and real-time video compression that commercial solutions became feasible

nostalgia guy in 1980 like "kids these days don't send and receive telegrams. kids these days don't buy war bonds."

I was looking for examples of the wording on telegrams sent to families in Canada when soldiers were killed in the First World War, but now I have questions about "surviving infidelity or family woodworking."

I am experiencing end of year misanthropy. Right now I am angry that searching for animated GIFs about telegrams returns only GIFs about the app and not the doot doot dots. Was also mad about some TTRPG podcaster I have never listened to, for no reason. I blame Trump, mortality and indigestion.

"Perhaps the solution would be for us to abandon telegrams, which seem in any case to be going out of fashion."

This was in 1994.

Do women have similar "leaks sharing" (revenge porn - you can't "pirate" amateur porn, that's you engaging in nonconsensually shared intimate material) telegrams as men do?
Or are they all in the same groups?

That's the ethical consumption of porn talk to have!

And who cares if they did? Russia has sent teams to assassinate Zelenskyy from the first day of their (latest) unprovoked war of aggression, years ago. The correct Allied response is a series of four-letter telegrams (text: FAFO), with missile shipments to match. Self-defence is a...
