Hospitality at Como FC. Literally the best footballing experience me and my mates have ever had. The San Siro in Milan. I have wanted to come here in forever so it was an absolute dream come true Silverstone with 25. She got me the sort of access I could only ever have dreamed of for a motorsports event. ELMS is such a great event, I recommend it to any petrol head. The latter of 2 black tie events I attended this year. I always worry on the lead up but always have a brilliant time

In the last couple of weeks alone, she managed to start a podcast and front a private members club. Her every act lightens the psychic toll of the news agenda. Truss has all the venality and malignancy of the other bastards this year, but none of the influence, success or talent. She is the least competent politician we have ever seen. In terms of presentation, content and record, no-one can quite match her consistent lack of qualities. Her primary social contribution to the life of the nation now comes as a kind of ad- hoc psychological experiment in which we discover what life is like when you have literally no self-awareness whatsoever. It's been a dark, dark time. But she really has made it a happier and more satisfying experience than it would otherwise have been. She is like a reminder of a different, better world, in which the lunatics were stuck making podcasts in cupboards rather than running world economies. It's been so terribly nice to drop in every so often, find out what she's up to, and enjoy the ruination of an enemy.

I was going to write a best of list this year. I got lazy.

But! I did write a whole entry about Man's Best Friend and why I love both it and Sabrina Carpenter. So fuck it. Here's my thoughts:
I bounced off "Manchild" (MBF's first single) and Man's Best Friend itself hard on first listen. After Short N' Sweet had been my 2024 pop album of the year, I worried Sabrina had stretched her blend of self-deprecating horniness and hot girl shit-posting beyond the breaking point and into self parody territory. But then I listened again. And again. And then, oops, it was December and Spotify (I know, I know) told me I'd listened to Sabrina Carpenter's new record more than almost anyone else on planet Earth. So what happened? Well, for one thing, and I know some people won't like this, but... man. Jack Antonoff. He is just such a good fit for Carpenter. When Sabrina finally scored the coveted Nardwuar interview, she mentioned her and Antonoff's shared love of Jeff Lynne. And as she literally held a copy of the soundtrack for Olivia Newton-John's famous flop Xanadu (produced by Lynne) something just clicked. Man's Best Friend is an album for people who love pop girlies AND Electric Light Orchestra -- and that's me. So much of the front half of MBF (but especially on "Nobody's Son") you can hear callbacks to some of Lynne and ELO's finest work. But then the back half of the record hits and all of the sudden we're in late '80s and early '90s R&B territory. The TLC of "When Did You Get Hot". The Control era Janet of "House Tour". Plus, the requisite Dollyness of "Go Go Juice" and the all ABBA all the time closer "Goodbye". Carpenter, Antonoff, and co-composer Amy Allen feel sometimes limitless in their ability to successfully ape a broad range of the greatest pop music of the last half century. However, the biggest reason I love Man's Best Friend (and everyone thinks I'm crazy for this, but hear me out): it's a concept record. Instead of taking on The Wizard of Oz or exploring the idea of being lost in an unrecognizable future (as ELO did with their two concept records), Carpenter instead explores the evolution of dating in your twenties. (continued) And that may not sound like a concept record, but inquire further, my friend, and I think you'll see my math checks out. "Manchild" is about getting bored with low effort situationships. And then from "Tears" to "Nobody's Son" we get this story of Sabrina trying (and failing) to make a serious relationship work. She embraces the simple pleasures with "Tears" (who doesn't lowkey thrill for a guy who'll cook you dinner and put together your IKEA furniture). But she fixates so much on the idea of the normal life that she pushes this "perfect" guy away. And then you get the spinning out of "Never Getting Laid", the falling back on old habits of "When Did You Get Hot," and the destructive self-narrativizing of "Don't Worry I'll Make You Worry". But ultimately she finds resolution with "Goodbye" -- a song where she realizes she's in her twenties and it's okay to move on and just take romance as it comes. Sabrina Carpenter may be one of the most famous women on Earth, but when it comes to love she's kind of putting out average dude vibes. And as a forty something trans woman who is only this year coming to terms with her own attraction towards men, I found that very comforting. Sure, the specificity of our respective lives can feel isolating sometimes. It's easy to feel like a weirdo who'll never find the right person. Man's Best Friend is a record that says, "you, too, huh?" It's a pint of ice cream, a good cry, and a night full of fits of laughter with a bestie you've never met. And whoever Sabrina Carpenter may be in her day-to-day life, her music is a shoulder. It also doesn't hurt that she's been such a loud ally for drag queens, trans people, and queer folks in general in a year where we're being systematically written out of public life.

PLURIBUS (Season one) by Vince Gilligan (2025)

This has to be Vince's best work, right? Every cut and every shot feels so intentional, like art pieces hanging in museums. And Carol is a clown car of a character in the best way possible with how complex she is.

It only takes about two episodes to get the gist of a complex science fiction concept because of how well it’s written. And people hate one of Vince Gilligan’s female characters that acts on emotions, so you know something is going well. The slow drip of information is absolutely essential for this series, because you should be spending that time trying to understand Carol’s perspective of the whole incident. She’s managing one of the most impossible and isolating things any human can experience, and there’s still so much we learn about Carol nearly every episode. She’s like a clown car of a character in the best way possible. [SPOILERS] My one complaint is basically the setup of the seventh episode, “The Gap.” It’s an important episode as Manousos gets from Paraguay to Panama. His trek is fine, but I don’t think we needed that much footage of a lonely and bored Carol quite literally screaming how she's feeling at any given point. It felt like a high schooler directed those scenes with how clumsily metaphorical they were.
