Today, Maine observes Indigenous Peoples' Day. We honor the lands and legacies of the Wabanaki Nations — Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Abenaki.

I look forward to passing legislation in the Senate to protect tribal sovereignty, which has been trampled for too long.

John’s Splinters: Sun reflecting off still water along Penobscot Bay, Morn’ sky filled with cirrus streaming off East. Trees in mixed dress, skimpy, or decked out. Forest moving with birds, large to small. Leaves dancing in the sun. 44ºF headed to 59. Ya’ll be careful out there!

Maine Central Railroad was chartered in 1856 and began operations in 1862. By 1884, it was the longest railroad in New England. It was the merger of the Androscoggin and Kennebec Railroad and the Penobscot and Kennebec Railroad, resulting in a line from Danville (now Auburn) to Bangor.

"Indigenous Peoples Day is about so much more than the name. It is about living our truth together and being better for it." By Maulian Bryant, executive director of the Wabanaki Alliance and a citizen of the Penobscot Nation in Maine. @bangordailynews.bsky.social
Opinion: Indigenous Peoples Day is about honor, healing and survival
"By having a holiday named after Columbus we not only erase the truth of history we glorify these atrocities as things to be revered and celebrated."

Before Detroit was Motown, Michigan was long a natural resource breadbasket: timber, limestone, copper. Around solstice the Penobscot Building's facades gleam with Silurian Corals of the city's bedrock. #Photography #Stunday #Architecture #Monochrome #Classicmono #B&W

We live about 10 miles inland from Penobscot bay. But these photos show what it is like when the fog pushes over 3 mountains and then fills the valley. And you can feel the ocean cold on the breeze

These two signs have been removed from Acadia National Park (Passamaquoddy and Penobscot territory).

I am not okay.

Another trip to an Islesboro Preserve.
Nice long walk along trail,
encounted many ecological niches!
Finally down to beach,
deep blue waters,
Favored with swirling white clouds.
Temperature nigh on to perfect.
Sailboats skimming cross Penobscot Bay.
Home for a quiet read!

Kathleen Hackett co-wrote 2 books on Maine houses that extol her “reverence for the land.”

*Her family repeatedly asked an elderly neighbor to chop down trees blocking their view of Penobscot Bay, but the neighbor refused.

**Now, Hackett's husband is accused of killing the trees by poisoning.
