The Donald J. Trump and The Walter Cronkite School of Journalism

Hey, careful what you ask for.

I read this piece and felt as Jeff did on the new journalism. And, to be completly honest, I love reading Jed Perl but he got Lauren Oyler and T. J. Clark completely wrong in this. It didn't feel like an earnest reckoning with their work.
Maybe worth adding that this grumble was provoked by disagreement with the margins of Jed Perl’s nonetheless excellent essay on Becca Rothfeld, Andrea Long Chu, & TJ Clark. It’s his misunderstanding of new journalism that grates. www.nybooks.com/articles/202...

I'm giving this #poem about #fascism another airing.
On a day when the Floods up the Pacific Northwest of US and Canada are getting virtually no UK news coverage, Farage gets away with antisemitism and our govt appeases fascists and war crimes it seems apt.

This “Woe Is White Guy” piece is just amazingly sloppy, among other things

Women make up like 2/3 of people getting J-school degrees! The fact that most new hires for journalism jobs at a given outlet—notice he avoids an industry-wide number—isn’t remarkable!
If you are a white man in media and STILL whining about all the Black/poc/women who "took your jobs" after the absolute bloodbath/backlash and almost violent re-whitening of media, punditry and academia in the past year, you should go to therapy, find god/gods or take up knitting

Just my two cents

A good analysis of the Wiles articles, which give J-school professors great teaching fodder on access journalism. Whipple never makes Wiles uncomfortable. Ask her if she’s worried about being an accessory to murder and you probably won’t get invited back. bsky.app/profile/capi...
People are treating Chris Whipple's Susie Wiles articles in Vanity Fair today as big news - the NYT even recapped them. But Wiles is no dummy; she knows how to work the press. These articles read like a Trump press release, excuse after excuse with no pushback. It's the anti-Chotiner interview. 1/

‘Mr Trump's real motivation may be getting the BBC to soften its coverage, said Michael J Socolow, a professor of communication and journalism at the University of Maine.
"I think the money is definitely secondary to getting the BBC to treat him differently," he said.’

FC has a top-notch journalism school. Some of the best & brightest students I knew there were J majors. Luckily quite a few also did theatre! I have followed their careers with pride.

Interesting read here. The kicker: “Journalism schools that fail to teach their students or, at least, offer courses on how to build an audience, manage a product and create a sustainable business model will be failing their students.” www.niemanlab.org/2025/12/j-sc...
J-schools will formalize the creator economy education
"These programs aren't meant to replace core journalism skills. Rather, it's about applying those skills to new models."

We aren’t producing as many trained journalists which is why I quit a $130K per year (in 2004) corporate media job to teach high school journalism. Got my J degree in 83.

There was a spelling and grammar exam we had to take to pass j School and it was ridiculously hard. Like if you got a D on it you celebrated.

Which now seems crazy considering “journalism” these days

I cringe to think of all the articles and headlines I wrote over my journalism career that contained phrases like “autistic man,” “blind woman” or “handicapped child.” In my defence, times were different when I graduated J-school.
